Following the death of Carrie Fisher the latest loss in a 2016 that has witnessed the deaths of icons like David Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Leonard Cohen and George Michael author George R.R. Martin turned to his blog to plead for the arrival of 2017.
"Death, death, and more death ... this year just keeps getting worse and worse," Martin wrote. "Please, let this wretched year come to an end."
In Martin's LiveJournal post, the writer briefly paid tribute to Fisher. "There is not much I can say about the death of Carrie Fisher that a thousand other people have not said already," he wrote. "She was way too young. A bright, beautiful, talented actress, and a strong, witty, outspoken woman. Princess Leia will live as long as Star Wars does ... probably forever... "
However, the majority of Martin's post focused on a death nearly lost in the shadow of Carrie Fisher and George Michael: Watership Down author Richard Adams, who died at the age of 96 on the day before Christmas.
"[The Year's Best Science Fiction founder] Gardner Dozois ranks Watership Down as one of the three great fantasy novels of the twentieth century, right up there with Lord of the Rings and The Once and Future King, and I agree. A truly amazing book," Martin wrote.

And maybe brought the dead ones back.
