(17,566 posts)Rev. Jeremiah Wright gained national attention in 2008 when excerpts from dozens of his sermons were subject to intense media scrutiny, and were said to be fanning the flames of racism. Wright was the former pastor of President Obama. Obama denounced the statements in question, and even quit the church, but the religious right continue to press the issue of his relationship with Wright even into the waning days of his presidency.
Now Trump has invited the Rev. Paula White (!) to pray with him at the Inauguration. White is a televangelist who was investigated ten years ago for shady fundraising. The Senate Finance Committee spent three years scrutinizing her finances. Not just suggesting that she was exploiting followers or fanning flames - actually investigating her for three years.
So, since the religious right are such a fair minded bunch without a scrap of hypocrisy - I'm as sure as I can be that they will denounce Rev. White and Trump as strongly as they denounced Rev. Wright and Obama. I would hate to see our country led by a president who took guidance from a shady minister. Wright? I mean, right?
Yeah, wright.

(14,853 posts)that "prosperity gospel" stuff. People like to feel good about themselves, and love of money is pretty much the 'Murican way!
Prosperity gospel preachers teach that God wants people to be rich, and that he makes them wealthy as a sign of his blessing and favor; the richer you are, the more God loves you.
I have NOT been religious since early childhood, but I think it's interesting how the following passages from the "new covenant from Jesus" (New Testament) are apparently ignored with various kinds of mental jiu-jitsu -- e.g., denying "love of money" despite it being the main focus of their lives.
Matthew 19:23-24
"Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.'"
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Luke 12:33
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
