Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I'm in line at the grocery store, and the lady in front of me used Food stamps and the guy in
back of me started hemming and hawing. He said, "My god, do you believe this?" like trying to get me and the others in line to participate in his disgust. As loudly, and roundly as I could, and my theatre background lets me PROJECT people:
"FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE"
He was shocked. I mean shocked. "I'D RATHER SEE MY HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS GO TO FEED HER OR ANY OTHER FAMILY INSTEAD OF LAUNCHING A 20 MILLION DOLLAR MISSILE AT A CAMEL'S ASS. SHE'S IN A VETERAN'S FAMILY, DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT? YOU HAVE THE FUCKING NERVE TO SPIT ON OUR TROOPS BY AIRING YOUR SHIT NOW?"
"You think it's me and *MY* mouth?" he said,
'TRUST ME. EVERYONE HERE IS MORE OFFENDED WITH YOUR LITTLE DISPLAY THAN MY BIG ONE. YOU ARE A FUCKING TRAITOR AND ASSHOLE AND YOUR ACTIONS TOWARD THIS WOMAN IS WAY WORSE THAN MY PROFANITY ANYDAY"
The cashier laughed. I got three thumbs up and a high five.
Really.
Today.
After I cashed out, the hoopla went down, the lady approached me in the parking lot and told me thank you. Then, with pride, her eyes glistened, she said, "My father served in the Navy and my husband was a Marine before he died. How did you know?"
"I am the daughter of a Veteran too, we just have to stick together now. My Daddy didn't fight on foreign soil to see ours starve here. That man is the worst type of man"
Then she hugged me.
And I cried.

I was in a wreck in 1985 that left me in a wheelchair for 10 months. I couldn't work obviously and had to get some help since I had an 8 year old son and was a single mom. The cashier who knew me forever since I shopped in that store all the time says 'I can't believe you're using these?'
Really? You can't believe someone who is confined to a wheelchair with 2 broken legs needs some assistance? I wanted to slap the hell out of her.
Since then I went back to college, got a BS in Computer Science and more than paid back in taxes what I used at the time. And even if I didn't it shouldn't matter - I needed help just like all others do that use them.
I think it's amazing that people like that man think those are easy to get in the first place - they're not. You have to be very needy to even qualify.
LaydeeBug
(10,291 posts)And I have to be honest...I am little disappointed that you felt you needed to say you paid more back in taxes than you took in food stamps anyway. Don't get me wrong, I sincerely applaud your upward mobility, but your worth as a person doesn't rely on it. Not that I was saying that it was...you know what I mean

This woman is my heroine right now. Too many of us remain silent because we were taught to "be nice". Fuck that shit. I'm almost 70 years old and I don't give two shits if people think me speaking out isn't "nice". My son and I agreed at Christmas that we're calling these bullies out every single time we witness this crap, and that any Trump voter who is emboldened by that orange piece of shit just because he's been ensconced in our White House will know how we feel about him and his stolen election.
Remember - bullies are usually cowards. They expect you to be intimidated by them. Even in my younger days I was rarely intimidated by anyone, so now that I'm older I could care less.

(34,582 posts)but in Texas it is called EBT (electronic benefits transfer). The cards are quite identifiable. If people don't want to believe you, that is on them, not you. Thanks for saying something. Growing up, my family had to resort to food stamps (when they were stamps). It was hard enough knowing you had to use them without some asshole trying to humiliate you when you did. We were eligible for school lunches, too. I skipped most lunches during that time.

(9,350 posts)You really do not have to be paying much attention to know who is using SNAP benefits. It is a card, but anyone can tell that it is a SNAP benefits card. It looks totally different from any other debit card. In my area they also have the name of the card written on the card. The name is not like most debit cards I have seen. The name is in big letters in the middle of a plain looking card. Most people should know what the card looks like because most stores that accept the card have signs saying they accept the card. In addition, there are occasionally news stories about people misusing the money from their cards. During these news segments, a picture of the card may be shown.
I have seen multiple people using SNAP benefits cards. I have not seen anyone complain about people using those cards, but I live in a liberal area. There is a conservative area near where I live and I once saw a guy, in that area, with a shirt that said, "Silly liberals checks are for workers". Maybe someone in that area would say something like what was said in the OP.
I think most people born in certain years still say food stamps. I grew up in a time when it was called food stamps and I still say food stamps even though I know it is now a card called SNAP benefits. Many people I know who grew up before it was changed still call it food stamps.

(618 posts)The cashier has to ring things up separately, or when the customer swipes the card, there's a notification on the readout that's visible.
Orrex
(63,085 posts)It's ugly green with ugly yellow lettering, and unless you cover it conspicuously with your hand while swiping it, it'll be visible even to casual, accidental observation. Certainly it doesn't require someone to be "spying" on "interactions to catch one in the wild." More like: eyes at least half-open and facing in the general direction of the register.
And if you do cover it with your hand while swiping, you make yourself pointedly conspicuous and will draw attention. Further, if the cashier doesn't realize what you're doing, they won't hit the "EBT" key on their screen, and you'll have to swipe it again.
In short, the card is seemingly deliberately made to be obvious and, by extension, embarrassing, much like the can't-possibly-miss-them discounted lunch cards I had to use in junior high.
demmiblue
(36,744 posts)I didn't think that people really paid any attention to what method of payment another shopper is using. I know I don't (beyond cash vs. card payments). Perhaps our lanes/swipe pads are set up differently... I would never be close enough to see the type of card one is using without consciously looking (swipes are horizontal and not vertical). Also, there is an EBT option on the swipe pad.
You do make a great case, though. EBT cards should be inconspicuous.

(9,808 posts)I live in a place with enormous personal bubbles, despite being a densely populated city. In the grocery line, a cart's length is starting to intrude on personal space. So it's easier for the ugly cards to go unnoticed. (WIC still comes in for a lot of cruelty, though.)
But other places I've visited, people get much closer. I do not like this. OTOH... if you're standing close enough to my back that I can tell what you had for lunch, and you get my heel on your toe or my elbow in your ribs... oops. Sorry.

(9,350 posts)In my area it is very easy to tell who is using SNAP benefits cards. They look totally different from regular debit cards. I think the federal government needs to make states change the way the card looks or force states to just put the money in a bank account. That way people will get a regular debit card. The federal and stage governments could then decide to either allow people to use the money for anything the choose, or try to work out a way that the bank would know what things a person is not allowed to buy.
I assume the cards look the way they do in the hopes that people will be embarrassed enough to not stay on SNAP benefits too long. There may be a feeling that people fearing the condemnation of their peers may cause them to get off benefits sooner than if their was no chance of their peers criticizing them. It is very possible that a number of the people qualify for SNAP benefits do not apply for them due to shame and fear of their peers. Government officials my fear that if there were no longer shame associated with SNAP benefits more people would try to apply for them.
demmiblue
(36,744 posts)My comment was in regards to others noticing what card another person uses (especially when they are third in line).
As I responded to Orrex, I think it may be how our lanes/swipe pads are set up.
I agree with you about everything else. All people should be afforded the basic necessities of life in a way that does not diminish their dignity.

They live in their Fox Fantasy World in which everybody in America support this crap and the orange cretin won the selection in a landslide vote, so hearing from someone like you step of up defend his victim while putting him plainly on his ass made him see that his world view is not shared by everyone else. People like this guy and that young nutter woman in Chicago a couple of weeks ago depend on "polite" enablers. 18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason....not hard reading....
Further reading.....
"Under Article III, Section 3, of the Constitution, any person who levies war against the United States or adheres to its enemies by giving them Aid and Comfort has committed treason within the meaning of the Constitution. The term aid and comfort refers to any act that manifests a betrayal of allegiance to the United States, such as furnishing enemies with arms, troops, transportation, shelter, or classified information. If a subversive act has any tendency to weaken the power of the United States to attack or resist its enemies, aid and comfort has been given.
The Treason Clause applies only to disloyal acts committed during times of war. Acts of dis-loyalty during peacetime are not considered treasonous under the Constitution."
You should note..."enemies" and "war" are the bullet points and I don't remember POTUS having asked Congress to declare war or referred to Russia as an enemy....certainly Putin is a reprehensible shit wagon.... but I have enough faith in our current POTUS to know the meaning of Treason well enough to debunk your false declarations.....

(4,423 posts)Young man working for minimum wage, barely afford car insurance on his beater, shares apartment with 4 friends, works at Taco Bell, one day at the drive thru window a guy drives up in his nice newer model car orders a ton of food and pays for it using an EBT card, the same benefits that the working young man was turned down for because making minimum wage was too much money to qualify for assistance. Order gets messed up somehow and angry EBT using guy viciously lashes out at minimum wage Working man, who than also gets blasted by his shift manager, young man wants to quit job but doesn't.
I told my son to just let it roll off his shoulders because we will fight everyday to try and make the minimum wage a thing of the past replaced by a living wage that would make a person proud of working hard.

(10,291 posts)I've never been on food stamps, so I am not aware of what it's called now, etc, but your spiteful story made me check for where I am...and, of course...you can't buy prepared foods with food stamps in Maryland, but you *can*, however, use them at the farmer's market.
You refer to a pilot program they launched in 2011.
Also, learning to be a "share" person instead of a "compare" person might go a long way toward happiness. Your "imagine this" story involves your son deciding that the person using the EBT card at Taco Bell actually owned the car, etc. You have to make the 'lowest common denominator' stretch each time, at every comparison. The person using the food stamps at Taco Bell has not walked a mile in your son's shoes. But your son hasn't walked a mile in that person's shoes either. But know this: if your son needed help, and sought help HERE in the USA and it wasn't available to him, for whatever reason...regardless of the "other"...then I am really, really sorry, because that means that we fell short on some level...each and every one of us.
We are the wealthiest nation on earth. We throw away too much food while our own go hungry and it is fucking wrong.
So I am sorry you know anyone who reached out for help, and didn't get it. It isn't "they didn't get the help because the Taco Bell card user did...the two are unrelated.
Hope that helps.

(3,702 posts)I will give you and your son the benefit of the doubt that this happened as you have described. However, since you CANNOT use EBT cards for prepared hot foods, there is no way it would have been approved at Taco Bell.
More likely would be someone found or stole an EBT card, no idea how it works - is just used to the idea that the uninformed project that EBT= free food, and tried to use at Taco Bell.

(4,423 posts)have been relaxed for various reasons... but that is beside the point. This happened and happens, the broader context being that the working person pays the taxes that the non working person uses to get the food prepared by the working person who's life is not improved from the work because of such low minimum wage.
Fight for living wage, I always support people that need help getting help through the welfare system but I refuse to support welfare instead of work and think that higher minimum wage can help fix that disparity.

refusing to support welfare instead of work? No one advocates that if you are able to work you should sit on your butt and collect welfare. But a lot of those "non-working" people are elderly, disabled, or not making enough to get by. You do realize you CAN work and still be eligible for benefits - this helps WORKING single parents as well. I know you say you support getting help through the welfare system, however it sounds like you don't really understand how the system works.
Currently 4 states allow EBT at fast food, I apologize for not realizing that. But not sure how that is "relaxed" - what it is meant is for people who cannot prepare food - homeless, elderly, disabled - to still be able to eat. I am sorry your son did not qualify for benefits and I am sorry he ran across one of the small % who will always exploit any system. But food stamps aren't a waste of tax payer dollars.
Edit - did more research on EBT usage.

(13,615 posts)This is so refreshing! Understandably this board has been inundated by the 10,000 iterations of "we have to understand why we got the white working class angry at us and must trying to make amends or else we will lose every election forever! Now, let me be blunt. Yes, we do have to figure out why our message is not getting out to certain parts of the country. That is not a new issue, it has been an issue ever since Nixon did his "Southern strategy" that in effect turned a lot of the former union members against the Democratic Party. Yes we are still stunned from those "Reagan Democrats", or "independent voters that for some reason always vote Republican", or any of 1000 little iterations that we are very used to seeing.
However, we cannot forget one thing: a lot of these conservative voters like to bully. Let's be honest, America likes bullies, whether they are on the football field, the reality television shows, the board rooms, are comic books, or any number of ways. We can try to go ahead and be reasonable, but the fact is unless we show our opponents that we can and will land a left hook to their job to match the ones they are aiming below are belts and at our guts they will not respect us. Sadly, this, reasonableness is interpreted as weakness. Actually we know that the word they would use is not weakness but we cannot go ahead and use that sort of language here on DU, if nothing else because it would show a lot of racial, gender, intellectual slurs. Simply put, of only all the sudden run to the hills when they realize the people that they have bullied are not going to go ahead and take their crap anymore, yes they may go ahead and try to get verbally friends to teach that uppity person unless and. I have had times on this board where people have talked to me and said that they would "straighten me out", and these are supposed liberals. The Internet is like the phenomenon they used to call "beer muscles", were a lot of people who fancy themselves at war years start shaking their fist, even though anyone who actually saw the person behind the curtain would realize that they are anything but the alpha males they think they are. This is where we pulled the curtains away and make it clear that if people are going to feel emboldened by Mr. Trump to let their inner demons fly out of their mouth and vomit on our face that we will at the very least call them out for the weaklings they are and very possibly make them get a mop and bucket and clean up their mess. If they don't then they can be relegated to the second-class citizenship they rightfully deserve not one based on race creed or color but simply because they choose to enjoy ignorant behavior at other people's expense.
Some people some of them in Congress some of them in the checkout line are thinking that the way that they are going to get through these four years is by holding their mouth shut and ignoring people when they go ahead and papal antics. I have news for you, yes sometimes discretion is the better part of valor, but when you deal with an aggressive, vicious sort that has been told they will not feel and need repercussions for their actions, that does not help you. Even if you have placated them, compromised with them, flattered them, try to understand them, all that they are going to think is that you were weak and that they have a God-given right to abuse you, use you, and discard you. It sure as hell doesn't help that the churches, the networks, and yes clerks in the checkout line will be encouraging all of this. The enemy does not just want a piece of the pie, they want the pie, the bakery, and everything else, and when they get everything else, they're going to the plane that they are still not getting all they want, so we will try to find someone else to mess with. If we're lucky, their response will be "let's find a new person to make war with" because frankly the Chinese are not going to stand for that.

When I was on snap a few years ago, I had to tell the cashier I was using an Access card so she could hit the ebt key on her register before I could slide the card. Also, the sliders were vertical, making it easy to see the card when you go to slide it.

And ironically, they'll also be the first ones to insist that they're more "Christian" than you, too. Which is a complete joke. They'll be first to wave the Bible in your face and declare you a stupid, faithless infidel. And they'll likely quote something from Leviticus to prove it. Oddly enough, NEVER have I heard from these people with all their references to the Bible - ANY quotes from the Beatitudes, ANY quotes from the parable of the rich young man, ANY quotes referencing "whatever you do to the least of these, you do to ME." They seem to like the Old Testament best, but they never cite the story about Cain and Abel, and God confronting Cain after Cain killed his brother. You NEVER hear any of that. Not EVER. (53,795 posts)people wear safety pins when they are pro tolerance. It's just a quiet way of letting targeted Americans know that they have an ally whether they're a minority, immigrant, or oppressed by nationalism or xenophobia or Trumpism in any way.

(1,002 posts)I am the daughter of a career military father myself - US Army, 30 Proud Years of Service! I too have fallen upon hard times and I'm forced to use the SNAP program (food stamps) just to have something to put on my table. If some idiot were to take me to task about this, I'd go ballistic. My Dad fought in 3 wars to help defend our rights under the Constitution and that includes the right of free speech. I urge everyone to use this right to it's fullest extent!

(2,067 posts)The way we run the program, with absolutely no empahasis on nutritious or organic foods, can be at least partly blamed for skyrocketing Medicaid costs, as many beneficiaries of food stamps later have extremely high Medicaid expenditures due to overall poor health.
When we know many food stamp beneficiaries are also going to be Medicaid beneficiaries, why aren't we doing more to make sure one program doesn't negatively influence the expenditures of the other?

(10,291 posts)I have been very much on edge since the Russian highjacking of our democracy and I had what I will politely call, "words in a bar" with one guy, and then a few days later, this happened.
For the first time in my life, I *understand* how people just *fight*, because TWICE I was ready, truly, really, actually ready to step outside with a motherfucker. Like *THAT*. Really.
