It is a lack of morality and ethics. Our moral compass is wrong. For too long, too many of us have been greedily chasing after the God-almighty $$$. And now our gov is run by greedy immoral corrupt robber barons, who use fear and devisiveness to get their way.
So what do we do about it? Each and everyone of us must begin by cleaning up our own individual ethical values. Fix our own broken moral compass. Value the happiness of others as higher than the acquisition of money. As a Buddhist, I could write a lot about Buddhist ethics and compassion. But one has to actually PRACTICE Buddhism, not just know about it. Suffice it to say that we begin by practicing the Golden Rule of "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you." Everyone knows what the Golden Rule is. Although all religions teach the Golden Rule, you don't have to be religious to understand that practicing the Golden Rule is in one's own self interest. Simple to explain; simple to understand.
