Both the Senate and Senate committees can do things by unanimous consent that would otherwise be against the rules. In order for Democrats to use the quorum rule to block a nominee with majority support, they had to stay away (since only a single Democrat in attendance would mean that the vote would commence). But by staying away, they left themselves open to not having a voice to deny unanimous consent.

Look at Michigan. I stood in the gallery as Dems screamed out opposition to a voice vote and asked, rightly so, for a roll call, they just went on. We stomped and yelled to get them to follow the rules and they went right on. When they control all branches, they make the rules, all of them. The Supreme Court falls in line, the senate, the house, they will all do the masters bidding. We are on a roller coaster ride down. Wherever they are planning on taking us the government, senators and house can't stop it. The only thing that has ever slowed them down here is large public protests and threats of losing their power. And still they poisoned a city and no one is being held accountable. The modern day GOP is pure fascist and evil.
