Plus, you mean to tell me he talked to the Prime Minister of Australia today and was unaware of this deal?
He's just now going to look into it but somehow knows it's a "dumb deal"??

(9,313 posts)Until today, I was not aware of Australian detention policies. Seems to have created a horrible situation, with detainees being subjected to unconscionable abuse. From Wikipedia "... the Keating Government created a policy of mandatory detention of unauthorised arrivals, with non-citizens arriving by boat without a valid visa being detained until they were either granted a visa, or deported."
I've always objected to the term "illegal immigrant" here (given that being an "unauthorized arrival" -- or undocumented, or whatever -- in the US is not a crime).
Of course, if we "take them" they won't be "illegal," so his use of the term in that context is asinine. But, apart from my objection to his pejorative use of the term "illegal immigrant," if he's referring to their current designation by Australia as "unauthorized," he's not as far off the deep end as he usually is.
