They are separated from the civilian population and no longer feel like average American citizens. They are loyal to America in the abstract, not to Americans. This is what allows military over throws and coups.

that Obama had the wisdom to turn down.

He starts getting more people killed, the military will remove him. I'm sure they'd much rather have the malleable Pence than the raging narcissist.
