Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFor over 200 years, our political system has depended
Upon the President respecting the rule of law.
It has depended upon courteous regard for all in the country--not just those who voted for him.
It has depended upon providing more information about yourself than you would typically want to provide.
Until now. This clod has just undermined the entire civility and decorum of this office.
And never again will it have congenial civility without legislation.

(56,828 posts)one thing I said that coming out of the Trump administration is that if we survive, the next president and cabinet will all be subject to stricter disclosure laws - full tax returns and related financial statements for 7 years or more are required or you cannot run; any assets must be put in either a neutral blind trust or divested or you are not allowed to hold office; any potential conflicts of interest must be taken care of before assuming office; etc.

(22,976 posts)And why not? After this (if there *is* an "after this" , I do NOT want to see any more sketchy characters at the helm of the United States.
As you say, FULL disclosure, or no candidacy. NO conflicts of interest that would allow the office to be used for personal gain, etc.
Maybe call it the "Trump Law,"named for the preening, blundering, self-centered oaf who made the law itself so necessary.

(31,963 posts)No court would allow it. Congress or anyone else can not impose restrictions on presidential candidates that are not contained in the Constitution.

(56,828 posts)to exclude felons/persons convicted of violent crimes or anything else? Or, to add in additional requirements like disclosing finances and tax returns?

I don't believe even being a felon disqualifies you ( might be wrong about that, don't really know for sure)

(9,313 posts)Tragically, Congress failed in it's duty when they refused to impeach Bush/Cheney for war crimes.
And with that failure -- that refusal to stand and fight for America's commitment to humanitarian principles and laws -- we took a giant leap down the path to the horror of Trump's America.

(268,847 posts)I missed the boat by some distance - he is way worse than that. He has absolutely no manners, no knowledge of history, culture, society, protocol, no respect for diplomacy, etc., etc. Put simply decency missed him.

(33,956 posts)Was just a carney....now that he is in charge of the free world? Crikey. I haven't even explored the depths of my horror yet.

(7,723 posts)our only hope is that some congressional Republicans gain some sense of decency and honor and respect for law. But likely, we are screwed.

(14,561 posts)62 million people voted for him.
Another 60 million or so eligiable voters either did not vote or voted for candidates other than Hillary.
Only 65 million people voted for the truly capable and decent candidate for president.
The problem is NOT Trump.
Is it the overwhelming majority of people in this country who either totally support this kind of POTUS (as long as he has an R behind his name) OR are willing to accept it.
I posted prior to the election if Hillary won it was going to get U G L Y. It is ugly now, but it would have been a different kind of ugly. Someone was going to die if she had a democratic senate and tried to seat at SC Justice. That is not an exaggeration.
This country's soul is dead.
THAT is the problem.

(9,959 posts)We can't get rid of him easily, but we need the media and our intelligence agencies to do some extreme vetting to keep attention on all the ways Trump is dangerous to this country, along with all the ways he is enriching his family business. He will cause far more damage than any group of refugees ever could! By the time he's out of office, the U.S. will have no friends left except possibly Russia--and that only if Putin sees more opportunity to destabilize our country and gain a position as a world leader again. In just 2 weeks, he's already ticked off Great Britain and Australia. And after the Berkeley protest last night, I'm sure he and Bannon are figuring out how to impose martial law over the next protest.
