I know I would never put a client on speaker phone; the echo in the background is annoying.
He should be using a headset.

(21,841 posts)If one has long telephone calls, one plans for it by using a headset. It is more difficult to take notes if you have to hold the phone up to your ear.
My guess is that he is not used to long calls. He is used to dictatorially yelling orders and hanging up.

(47,953 posts)I would suspect he equates headsets with peons working at call centers, or maybe secretaries. "Real" bosses use a corded phone! That way he can slam it down at the end!

(34,131 posts)That is an historic piece of furniture and should be treated with respect - more respect than any human in that photo. My guests use coasters when I've got the plastic topped folding tables for meetings, not only when we're getting together in smaller groups in the living room!
The Resolute desk has been in this country longer than Trump's family. It should last far longer than he does!

(6,568 posts)I did my coffee table that way. Not all finishes are super porous.
csziggy
(34,131 posts)I have a secretary that dates from the 1830s -I would never apply a plasticized finish to it. When I had it restored I went to a museum qualified furniture restorer who was careful to not damage the original finish. The piece has been in my family for 60 years and before that belonged to the family of a friend of my grandmother's since it was custom built as a wedding present.
Back when I was younger I did have some furniture that were melamine finish and impervious to water damage. Some of the pieces in my house that I built are finished with water based polyurethane and are equally impervious. But a historic piece of furniture would NOT have that kind of finish.
Most likely it is finished with shellac or lacquer both of which are susceptible to water damage.Even if the glass is sitting on the leather, the water can wick through and damage the underlying wood.
The Resolute desk does have a leather inset but that is still no reason to treat it callously. Those leather insets can be replaced but it takes away from the originality every time they are.
Dr Hobbitstein
(6,568 posts)Never used a coaster. No rings. It's all in how you finish it (and pollish it).
Shellac, however, is notorious for leaving rings. I can't stand using the stuff.
Regardless, you are correct. Trump should show respect for a historical piece of furniture. I treat my dresser and night stand set from the 1800s far different than I do my coffee table that I built in 2002.
