White House: Trump's Mexico talk 'lighthearted'

The White House on Thursday confirmed that President Trump told Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto he might send the U.S. military across the border to deal with drug cartels and illegal immigration if Mexican authorities do not.

The confirmation comes one day after the White House pushed back on accounts of the conversation, saying reports that Trump “threatened to invade Mexico are false.”

An official told The Associated Press, which on Wednesday published a partial transcript of the conversation, that the remark was meant to be “lighthearted” and came in the context of a "pleasant and constructive” discussion about mutual efforts to fight drug cartels ...

Mexico has denied Donald Trump threatened to send American soldiers into the country during a telephone conversation with his counterpart, President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Such a threat “did not happen during that call,” the Mexican government said in a statement, released on Twitter on Wednesday night.

“I know it with absolute certainty, there was no threat,” a spokesman for Mr Peña Nieto, Eduardo Sanchez, said in a radio interview. “The things that have been said are nonsense and a downright lie” ...

and other Latin America countries, i don't see the joke. The equivalent would be the Mexican president joking about 9/11.

receiving criticism for characterizing Reagan's relationship with the USSR as bellicose during his administration. It was funny because these folks also argue the USSR's collapse was due to Reagan's pressure on them. The very definition of being bellicose.
