and one I think appropriate to the times, is "America the Beautiful" from Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. I was fortunate to hear this performed live twice: once during the Bush administration (Haden only convened the orchestra rarely, during troubled times) and once after his death, when Carla Bley led the group in a tribute to Haden.

It's long (16 minutes), but well worth listening to the whole thing. It starts quietly and straightforwardly and then moves quickly into a sour, off-key rendition; this is followed by some mellow lyrical passages which then open into a rousing version of Lift Every Voice and Sing (the Black American National Anthem); after some wild free jazz it finally returns to another dissonant, then uplifting, version of America the Beautiful.
