During President Donald Trumps first covert military operation, our craven Commander-in-Chief couldnt even be bothered to be in the Situation Room. Today, his Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, today stated that Trump was not physically present with Defense Secretary General Mattis and other top security officials to watch and direct the raid.

Defense Secretary James Mattis had to leave one of Washington's biggest annual social events, the Alfalfa Club Dinner, to deal with the repercussions, according to the official. He did not return.
(end snip)
So he wasn't in the Situation Room either, at least for all of it.

(2,654 posts)To the incoming Trump administration, President Obamas plan to take Raqqa from ISIS was so incremental and risk-averse that it was almost certain to fail. We found huge gaps in it, said a senior Trump administration official. It was poor staff work.

(82,849 posts)Isn't the brand-new la-de-dah attitude of conservatives something to behold? Oh, a Navy SEAL got killed in a clusterfuck raid? No biggie; he knew the dangers. The president couldn't be bothered to be in the situation room when it went down? What, he's supposed to be on call 24-7? The military initially said there were no civilian casualties and it turns out there were more than 40? Shrug. Fog of War. Can't know everything right away.
Compare and contrast congressional and wingnut reaction to Yemen with their reaction to Benghazi. I wonder if anyone in the popular media will notice?

"President Donald Trump will not attend the annual Alfalfa Club dinner Saturday night, an exclusive black-tie dinner and White House roast that every president since Ronald Reagan has attended.
Instead of the president himself, a squadron of senior administration officials and Trump family will attend, including Vice President Mike Pence, Ivanka Trump and her husband, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway.
......"Rather than hobnobbing with senior politicians, billionaire donors and media titans, Trump is expected to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Saturday.".....

Those people at the dinner were his close advisers, helped approve the mission and knew the attack was happening right then. They were staged for the 'big announcement' but the mission didn't go well at all.

Obama set up those missions where the president takes advice from experts and makes the final decision. What I found weird was all trumps people said, go. NON-expert people like bannon! helped trump kill a lot of people. Republicans should be ashamed for letting trump do this.

Navy: Special forces flew Trump flag in convoy
She said she did not know the potential penalties for the violation.
Military regulations say personnel should avoid implying Department of Defense sponsorship or endorsement of any political candidate, campaign or cause.
Some motorists said they were alarmed by military units flying the flag of a national leader rather than the country, which they said is reminiscent of a fascist government or banana republic.
Others noted that Trump is now the commander in chief, not a political candidate, and they saw nothing wrong with service members supporting him. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(62,269 posts)But they're under pressure by this high energy coked up fuckhead to "perform." Look at when Spicer came out and bitched about crowed sizes like a crazy person. That was straight from The Donald.
So you're Mattis, you've been ordered to "get it done," and you are in the situation room. You get intercepts that the helicopters were heard. Snap decision. Cancel it, disappoint dear leader, or go for it and hope for the best.
I think Mattis was pressured to go ahead with it and wasn't thinking objectively.
