Im a proud gun owner, hunter and love our public lands, he wrote below a photo of himself in camouflage hunting gear, holding his hound. Groups I support and care about fear it sends the wrong message. I hear you and HR621 dies tomorrow #keepitpublic.
But with the uncertainty surrounding the Trump Administrations position on public lands and the Republican Party platform supporting the conveyance of some federal lands, this year the bill seemed more consequential. Especially after the House of Representatives last month passed a rule change that made it easier to transfer public lands by designating federal land sales as budget neutral and eliminating rules that prevented the undervaluing of public lands.
Last week 20 outdoor industry groups including the influential Outdoor Industry Alliance, the National Wildlife Federation and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers sent a letter to the 115th Congress blasting the rule change, saying the public lands shape our national identity and are critical to the future of hunting, fishing and wildlife and the sustained economic health of communities bordering these lands.

(2,056 posts)If Democrats were more pragmatic on gun issues and how important hunting is to rural people many hunters would vote Democratic. Many normally Republican voters would be so easy to lure away just by making more of an effort to truly understand rural voters better.
I lived in Vermont for many years. The majority of voters owned guns, hunted, were strong on the environment and education, watched Nascar and came to support Civil Unions before any other state dared tackle the issue of same sex rights.
Rural voters are way more complex and a study of contrasts than many people realize.

(11,243 posts)They saw they were getting caught with their hands in the public cookie jar. Public pressure worked!
An aside, but Patagonia recently announced that they would no longer attend the yearly Outdoor Industry Retailers Association trade show that is held in Salt Lake City due to the disrespect Utah shows to the environment, despite the fact that the outdoor industry bring in many times more state revenue than competing oil and gas interests. They are lobbing to move it to Colorado. Good on them. Kick the bastards in their pocket book, where it hurts.

(5,954 posts)...It usually starts with a Bill to turn over MANAGEMENT of public land to a private company. Followed by conversion of some parts of park land to GOLF COURSES...and then finally "oh what the heck? It's not really parkland anyway. We're just talking about putting apartment buildings on golf courses..."

(51,550 posts)This bill would abolish the law enforcement capacity of Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service officials and hand over all law enforcement powers on U.S. public lands to local sheriffs. The change was one of the demands of the Bundy family and their followers who led last years occupation and refuse to recognize that the federal government exists. Local governments do not have the resources to monitor or enforce on public lands.
