By MARK LANDLER, PETER BAKER and DAVID E. SANGERFEB. 2, 2017
WASHINGTON President Trump, after promising a radical break with the foreign policy of Barack Obama, is embracing some key pillars of the former administrations strategy, including warning Israel to curb settlement construction, demanding that Russia withdraw from Crimea and threatening Iran with sanctions for ballistic missile tests.
In the most startling shift, the White House issued an unexpected statement appealing to the Israeli government not to expand the construction of Jewish settlements beyond their current borders in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Such expansion, it said, may not be helpful in achieving the goal of peace.
At the United Nations, Ambassador Nikki R. Haley declared that the United States would not lift sanctions against Russia until it stopped destabilizing Ukraine and pulled troops out of Crimea.
On Iran, the administration is preparing economic sanctions similar to those the Obama administration imposed just over a year ago. The White House has also shown no indication that it plans to rip up Mr. Obamas landmark nuclear deal, despite Mr. Trumps withering criticism of it during the presidential campaign.

(7,299 posts)Putin is starting to make his move in Ukraine while the W.H. is silent. Tinkle Bell has insulted our allies in Mexico, Australia and Germany. NATO is becoming nervous and weaker by the day. Did I mention the Muslim ban ?
This asshole says a few words about Israel and now he is adopting Obama's foreign policy. It is bullshit plain and simple. Tinkle Bell will bomb Iran at Netanyahu's behest.

(612 posts)If we could depend on him to maintain the same position on anything for a specific time, we might make some progress. But we have no way of knowing how he will perceive these issues after he receives unpleasant feedback or he becomes fatigued after a few phone calls. He has been consistently unprincipled, and it's difficult to imagine that he will suddenly adopt the positions of the President he regularly described as stupid. Who knows how he'll see things in another two weeks? I just don't buy it - nothing this guy says can be trusted. I don't believe he's going to suddenly choose to accept the wisdom of President Obama.
