From the article:
That was certainly the case for one Donald Trump supporter, who cast her ballot for the Republican last fall but was left in disbelief when a handful of her Syrian relatives two brothers-in-law, along with their wives and children were deported after the new president signed a travel ban targeting Muslims and refugees.
According to a report from Public Radio International, the family members of Sarmad Assali, a Syrian American Trump supporter, have valid U.S. visas but were still deported to Damascus, Syria from Philadelphia International Airport.

I can feel sorry for the affected family members, but this is one example of an uninformed idiot casting what she thought was an informed vote.
As Lincoln said, you can fool some of the people all of the time. Welcome to the easily fooled club Ms. Assali.
Edited to add:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak for me.
They came for your family Ms Assali

(531 posts)what I understand is that moderate muslims and muslim reformers are very frustrated and uncomfortable with the tendency on the left in the US (aka the 'regressive left') to put all muslims in one box. As most of the victims of islamic terrorism are muslims themselves, and as the sectarian war between shia and sunni muslims rages on, most notably in Syria, the left still does not have a sophisticated understanding of the diversity of the muslim community. Many moderates and reformers are opposed to the salafi practitioners of islam and their extremist views in many countries of immigration, and testify that many of these far right muslims are in fact fronts for radicalizing young men and recruting for ISIS. I was watching a documentary the other day where moderate muslim men in England were protesting demonstrations of far right conservative islamists on the street, and were very eager to disassociate themselves from the extremists and accuse them or being a front for ISIS organizing. We on the western left are doing the muslim community a disservice by trying to put them all in one box. Nomani, who is a professor at Georgetown U and a widely published journalist, makes this pretty clear:
"Finally, as a liberal Muslim who has experienced, first-hand, Islamic extremism in this world, I have been opposed to the decision by President Obama and the Democratic Party to tap dance around the Islam in Islamic State. Of course, Trumps rhetoric has been far more than indelicate and folks can have policy differences with his recommendations, but, to me, it has been exaggerated and demonized by the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, their media channels, such as Al Jazeera, and their proxies in the West, in a convenient distraction from the issue that most worries me as a human being on this earth: extremist Islam of the kind that has spilled blood from the hallways of the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai to the dance floor of the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla."

starshine00
(531 posts)and could you for a moment listen to what she is saying and try to understand why? She's a muslim immigrant who is worried about islamic terrorism and the failure of the left to address it, it is what many muslim immigrants come here to escape. And she's by far not the only one.

(25,841 posts)was saying how dangerous all Muslims are, and how we need to deport them, not let any into the country. Anyone who heard that and still voted for him is beyond an idiot. And if she never noticed that he said those things, then she's a complete ignoramus who deliberately didn't pay any attention to the election in any meaningful way, but that does not excuse her.
What I wish her relatives would do to her cannot be said in polite society. Not even on DU.

(25,841 posts)And as they lose their rights and protections they will have brought it upon themselves. Unfortunately, they'll have brought it upon the rest of us also.

(4,238 posts)They were fine with all the rhetoric targeting others -- Mexicans, Muslims, African-Americans, etc. -- but thought they were safe because they're Christian. Well, let this be a lesson. Just because you're not singled out doesn't mean you should sit idly by as others are. Sorry their family had to pay the price, but they won't learn until they feel the consequences of their actions.

Possibly she was one of these Trumpers who feel that she personally would not be affected because she is a good person.

(13,616 posts)Soon, indeed by 2018, I know that I'm going to have to reach out to many of those Trump voters that slapped me in the face, insulted me, but I do speak of me as if I was some sort of criminal where the very least not a real American, and say "look, you see that Donald Trump is out of control. We have to at least take the sand out of his hands so that he has some restraint, because at this rate will end up in World War III before we know it."
I'm not looking forward to having to make that speech, not just because I have some pride, not just because I feel that the current Democratic Party I have to deal with, especially down here in Florida is barely better than the alternative. Yes it is better, but I am really tired of people telling me to be cheerful when I realize all I have is a choice between one group that dislikes me and it never that actively hates me. However, because is responsible thing, I will be out there in late 2017 really 2018 I do my best to reach out.
That being said: I realized that what will help me in that effort is the fact that by that time a lot of these Trump voters will be suffering, and they will know that they did to themselves. Please keep in mind, many of these people are in my family, and many of these people would be broke or dead it was not for Social Security and Medicare. Yet, they voted for Trump, because he strokes for patriotic pride, even though Steve Bannon would probably like to kill every last one of them, because they are a shade darker than his pale skin that does little but highlight is Gin Blossom nose. I'm going to try not to give into malice, or Snark, but dammit will be an ocean in my ear that is screaming "how do you like your boy Trump now!" The fact that I know my first hope of winning any Trump boater in my side is the fact that they will have to suffer first, and then, and only then will they have a possible insight, as opposed to thinking that they just need to attack and blame others has done an awful lot to sour my soul.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)But the same people that were so easily fooled by Trump can be just as easily fooled again. The GOP will do all it can to blame everything on Obama. Remember the surveys that show a significant percentage of GOP voters blame Hurricane Katrina and Sept 11 on Obama.
And 43% of GOP voters still believe that Obama is a foreign born Muslim.
So while I hope that the Trump Presidency shows these GOP voters what they really voted for, I am not too hopeful.
