But immigration lawyers who have read the order carefully are now increasingly concerned that one of its provisions could have much wider repercussions, affecting literally every foreign visitor to America, from tourists to diplomats.
The little-noticed section, appearing immediately after the travel ban, calls for the government to develop a uniform screening standard and procedure for all individuals seeking to enter the United States. As written, it appears to require all visitors to go through the same vetting measures, regardless of where they come from or how long they intend to stay.If interpreted as broadly as its written, It would basically shut down tourism, said Stephen Legomsky, the former chief counsel for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services during the Obama administration.

(2,522 posts)For 2013
1. New York with 9,804,000 visitors
2. Florida with 7,209,000 visitors
3. California with 6,472,000 visitors
4. Hawaii with 3,172,000 visitors
5. Nevada with 2,915,000 visitors
6. Texas with 1,570,000 visitors
7. Illinois with 1,442,000 visitors
8. Massachusetts with 1,378,000 visitors
9. Pennsylvania with 993,000 visitors
10. New Jersey with 929,000 visitors
However, I rather suspect these are just the locations for clearing immigration. Indeed, Park Service data from 2010 suggests about 1.5 million foreign tourists at the Grand Canyon, and the better part of a million at Yosemite. One would also expect that a significant part of the roughly 11 million tourists visiting the Smokey Mountains are foreigners coming to Tennessee to enjoy the area's "famous Southern hospitality".
Still, it would seem that blue states - at least as gateways - would be worse hit.

(6,486 posts)But the thing that will completely kill tourism to America will be when they force nationwide open carry by virtually anyone (felons, mentally incompetents, terrorists) and "stand yer ground" (i.e. open season on minorities) on every state and city. And you know they can't wait to do that.

(11,996 posts)Sec. 4 Implementing Uniform Screening Standards for All Immigration Programs.
(a) The Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation shall implement a program, as part of the adjudication process for immigration benefits, to identify individuals seeking to enter the United States on a fraudulent basis with the intent to cause harm, or who are at risk of causing harm subsequent to their admission. This program will include the development of a uniform screening standard and procedure, such as in-person interviews; a database of identity documents proffered by applicants to ensure that duplicate documents are not used by multiple applicants; amended application forms that include questions aimed at identifying fraudulent answers and malicious intent; a mechanism to ensure that the applicant is who the applicant claims to be; a process to evaluate the applicant's likelihood of becoming a positively contributing member of society and the applicant's ability to make contributions to the national interest; and a mechanism to assess whether or not the applicant has the intent to commit criminal or terrorist acts after entering the United States.

I've lost count of how many times I've heard some anchor, reporter, or other talking head point out that some of the crap trump was spewing during the campaign about stuff that supposedly hadn't been done or handled or taken care of - WAS ALREADY IN PLACE, AND ALREADY HAPPENING.

(269 posts)Last time I was there was in October, for a road trip with my niece to Maine to see the fall colours. And the officer at that time seemed suspicious of us. "What do you mean by a 'ROAD TRIP'?" Evidently two women in their mid 20s to early 30s, never having been in trouble with the law and both with prominent jobs, warranted a raised eyebrow. Both liberal though, so I guess we're targets.
I spent 8 years of my childhood growing up in Michigan. I never did get my citizenship, but I feel a deep love for the country I used to call home. With this administration, I fear the affects on the executive branch are going to leave a lasting (damaging) impact for a long, long time after Trump is gone. I, a law-abiding boring Canadian, wouldn't be able to cross the border now even if I wanted to... not if they're going to want to see my Facebook or Twitter. And even if I could, the tension over there seems to be getting scary. I wouldn't feel safe.
He has to be insane to destroy allies, increase the risk of terrorism, order botched military actions without intelligence briefings, shit all over trade and tourism income. I mean, how does this help the economy? How does this help HIM and his family? His kids must get harrassed everywhere they go.
Now would be the time for his supporters to open their damn eyes. HELLO, he's scrapping regulations that protect you, trying to appoint a Secretary of Labor who wants to do away with minimum wage and breaks, take away your access to health care, take away your education, hurt Veterans and pensioners, pollute your water and basically starve you to death or watch you die from preventable disease. And it's pretty clear Mexico won't be paying for the wall. It's beyond stupid at this point to believe he cares about you. Everyone else saw the writing on the wall long before he was elected.
I just...
Preaching to the choir, I know. Sorry. Reaching peak frustration levels.

MANY of us here (not just at DU, but all over the country) are just right along with you. Especially the MAJORITY of us voters who proudly and wisely did NOT vote for him. Just feeling more and more vindicated every day. Heck, never mind the "every day" part. More like every minute on the minute.

(9,078 posts)Those directly affected by the travel ban is only the tip of the iceberg for the tourism industry.
A large number will be uncertain about the access to America and uncertain if they are welcome.
The fear and disgust that Trump has created ensures that we will lose millions of visitors.
Visits this year from Mexico will be down from 18 million to what? 14 million? Mexicans hate Trump. One poll showed he had 3% approval. UK visits will be down too from $4.5 million. They hate Trump too. There's two of the top three nations that support US tourism. Most of the world hate Trump. They are pissed at him. They are not going to choose US to visit over other nations. But what's new? Trump is hell-bent on destroying everything else in America. Why not tourism?
