President Donald Trump complained that he was not fully briefed before signing an executive order that gave chief political strategist Stephen Bannon a seat on the National Security Council, The New York Times reports. The executive order, which gave Bannon an unprecedented security role for a non-military adviser, was reportedly one of a series of orders crafted by Bannon and policy director Stephen Miller. Trump reportedly signed the order without fully understanding the power it would grant Bannon, and grew angry when he later learned the orders full significance. Other White House staff, including Chief of Staff Reince Priebus have also reportedly expressed concern over what they viewed as a lack of checks on Bannons and Millers powers. Priebus has since drafted a 10-part checklist of steps and approvals an executive order must receive before it is signed into action, the Times reports. Bannon, the former head of alt-right website Breitbart, has been credited with some of the Trump administrations most controversial moves, and reportedly told allies that he had a narrow time slot in which to push his own agenda in the White House before other advisers put a check on his influence.

I mean, we definitely have film of him showing approval for the ban, don't we?

(90,538 posts)He really really thought being POTUS was just a matter of waving his tiny hand and signing proclamations while others worked out the details. Well, others have been working out the details all right, and it is now starting to bite him in the ass.
I read the NYT article in full, and it is both hair-raising and hilarious. Well, mostly scary. Am I a bad person for laughing out loud?

Either way, his own fault.
I agree with those who say to make sure Twitler hears the phrase "Pres. Bannon" over and over.
His ego will take care of the rest.

(46,676 posts)But, Obama was a hard act to follow. No one should fall for Trump's silly CEO game. He really is running government like it was his own business.

(3,427 posts)to listen to briefings about anything for more than a few minutes -- unless, of course, the subject is himself and his greatness. His advisers know he likes to keep his briefings brief. I think Bannon took advantage of that fact to slip the NSC EO past him.

(14,274 posts)When asked in court if he "reviewed a lot of leases" he replied "Review or sign? I don't spend time reviewing leases."
He will sign whatever Bannon tells him to sign because he can't understand whatever is out in from of him. He doesn't own books. He listens to sound bites from tv and news stations as he flips through tv channels with a five second attention span.
I imagine this is part of why he insisted not attending security briefings. He would be the stupidest person in the room and every one of them would know it.
I agree with all you said. I have also read that he frequently changes his mind based on the last person to talk with him. We have entered a realm never before seen and it is scary.

(7,807 posts)Whose fault is that?
Instead of taking the person(s) who didn't brief him to task (Bannon, Priebus, et al), he tells the world?
He has nobody but himself to blame.
Oh, look! There's a video of the signing!

I don't want anyone thinking that without Bannon around, Trump would somehow be better, because he wouldn't.
I blame Bannon on Trump as much as I blame some of Trump's actions on Bannon. The two aren't that different from each other.
Someone whispering racism into your ear wouldn't appeal to you unless you agreed with the sentiments to begin with.
