When did this "link to tweet" stuff start on DU?

I mean, I know that it's because Resident Chump tweets like a methed-up howler monkey, but it seems like 25% of the posts I see lately contain nothing but link to tweet.

These posts are worthless to me and, I suspect, to others, because every one of the links is blocked by my workplace filters.

Is it impossible to quote the actual text of the tweet? It's not as though they're lengthy diatribes, after all.

there be a completely separate category on DU for discussions of Trumps tweets and/or "tweets" could be placed, because I have no desire to see these links and I have actually found it slows the loading even on my IPad. I also refuse to ever tweet and I feel like while we want to know what the Little man in the White House is spewing, I don't want to have to as a result be giving Twitter promotion.

Then the reader can cut & paste if they want to.

I do like having the link to the tweet - if people are going to refer to tweets - so I can go to the source. At the source I can gauge the reliability of the tweeter, see the reaction they are getting and follow links they might have posted to sources of their own.

While I don't like Twitter as a source, right now it is what many are using as a way to exchange information and views. Being able to get to the original source is a vast improvement over people quoting them without context - or worse, posting a screen shot with no source information other than a Twitter handle which is useless unless the reader has a Twitter account of their own.

Most of the tweets I've seen posted here as links are NOT to Twitler's tweets. Most are commentary or sarcasm. For instance, George Takei and John Fugelsang have both been posted here, among others.

Those of us who don't use Twitter find it annoying. A separate group for tweets would let those who enjoy them have tweeets, and those who don't can avoid them.

If the poster can't bother with at least a several-word summary, it's not worth bookmarking.

Same thing for the tweet-links. There are dozens of them every day, many of which are probably redundant and/or not terribly interesting. But the inability to see them creates a false sense of importance.

Thanks for the tips, though--I appreciate you taking the time to consider it.

I use Ghostery on Firefox, and had to whitlelist the Twitter social media button to get them to work.

For those who're finding the display of Twitter posts here annoying, installing a browser plugin like that could be a solution.

Me, I love the fact it's so easy to post stuff from Twitter now - on occasion there's been no other source for certain information, so I've had to do some annoyingly time-consuming copy-and-pasting and formatting to make the text resemble a tweet, and it also means it's possible to give access to Twitter-embedded gifs and videos that were near impossible to display here before now. In those cases, a text quote like you want wouldn't work, obviously.

leaving the link intact, so it's not a solution for your issue anyway.

If I have time, I'll try to remember to add a text transcript whenever I quote a tweet, but often they include graphics (and sometimes it's only the graphics I'm interested in), so there's no getting round that for you folks who access DU at strict workplaces, I'm afraid.

Before embedding tweets was enabled on DU, I used to include a link to the tweet along with the text, which I formatted with the "excerpt" tag and if there was an image I copy/pasted its URL into the excerpt.

I'm sorry for upsetting so many people. I was just excited because embedding actual tweets is so much easier and looks better.

I neglected to understand that those who cannot see embedded tweets have script blockers or other filters. I too have this problem with some animated gifs, linked from image-sharing sites. They freeze up my computer unless I immediately right-click/view image.

I'll do better.

I just disabled display of sigs in my account in the end - I miss out on a bit of color, but I definitely don't miss waiting an age for a page to load just because one or two posters whose comments I may not be interested in anyway have massive, slow-loading gifs in their sig lines.
