The following quote is from a 1978 nybooks interview with Hannah Arendt. The whole interview

is a must read. But this particular quote I felt was quite ominous in its contemporary accuracy. It's not terribly long. Elements in it are categorized by Totalitarianism, Lies, Facts and Theories, Evil etc.
]The great political criminals must be exposed and exposed especially to laughter. They are not great political criminals, but people who permitted great political crimes, which is something entirely different. The failure of his enterprises does not indicate that Hitler was an idiot.
