Trump sets Democratic field ablaze with anger

Trump sets Democratic field ablaze with anger
The price of entry for the 2020 presidential primary is ferocious opposition to the president.
By Gabriel Debenedetti 02/06/17 05:09 AM EST

The Democratic base is so roiled and enraged after only two weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency that a take-no-prisoners posture toward the White House is emerging as the price of entry for the 2020 primary.

An election that could have focused in on economic inequality and the excesses of Wall Street — the issues that animate the left’s leading tribunes, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — is already shaping up as a contest about the intensity of the resistance to Trump.

“In almost 20 years of doing this, I’ve never felt like we’re in a moment like we are now,” said Anne Caprara, a senior advisor for the Priorities USA Action super PAC and a veteran Democratic campaign operative. “This is the moment in history. People will look back and ask what you did, and there’s a real palpable recognition of that among elected officials."

“People will say, ‘Where were you when he appointed Jeff Sessions? Where were you when he picked a Supreme Court justice?’ That will be a real question in primaries, and I wouldn’t want to the the candidate on the wrong side of that,” said longtime strategist Bob Shrum, warning of the importance of public resistance in a week where Democratic senators began boycotting votes on Trump picks altogether.

To professional Democrats who’ve been working for candidates for decades, the current wave of activity is beginning to look more like a broad-based movement.

“This is a grassroots reaction at a level of intensity that I haven’t seen in the Democratic Party since Vietnam,” said Shrum. “It even exceeds the reaction to Iraq, which was more a slow simmer than this kind of explosive reaction."

Added former New Mexico governor and onetime presidential hopeful Bill Richardson, “Anyone who is hoping for a reconciliation or bipartisanship is smoking weed right now."

you have to get organized and raise a few bucks.

Find a good candidate for Congress in '18. Do it NOW and have a backup. If a Senator is in play, even more important.

Raise money.

Get as much press as you can.

Have your own Dem email list, Facebook page, blogs, and whatever to show support. Shove as much of it in their faces as you can.

Raise more money

Get more press

Have issue specific rallies. Find stuff the population tends to agree with you on. Even if your congresscritters seem to agree, find ways they don't.

Raise more money

Show the state you are the real Americans and you're on their side.

It ain't easy, but it's fantastic to see it work.

Estimated 3,300,000 – 4,600,000 people participated in the United States and up to 5 million did worldwide.

How many of them were old time party regulars? A small fraction of the total I bet.

We need these new people and their energy and ideas. I hope the democratic party embraces them wholeheartedly.

we dont need new people so much as different people at the helm. they are there. they are just invisible. they are mostly women, and especially women of color.
i guess it is hard to see your own spine in some ways, but we do have xrays and shit now. so lets open the floor a little more and go from there.

The old need to be teaching the new the ins and outs, etc. The new ones need to be updating the old ones about people's attitudes and priorities these days.

I want new blood also but not just for new blood's sake. They need to be talented, smart and good learners/listeners. I value what our more experienced Democrats have to offer even while occasionally disagreeing with their tactics. We need them both.

People are waking up and thousands are running for local offices now. Dog catcher, school board, city and county reps. Others are becoming more involved with the party itself as opposed to running for office. Exciting.

This increase in participation demands more attentive leaders than we've had in the past with a willingness to admit they don't have all the answers and when they do, there might be a different and possibly better one that their constituents want. This need highlights the importance in choosing our next set of leaders and spokes people.

All in all, I find encouragement and excitement in this movement and it helps when dealing with Shit Gibbon's blundering.

as one of the few here who supported both Bernie and Hillary and Obama x 100

But for years now the Dems have really been not smart about the ways of the bully Republicans. They needed to risk more to put a stop to them and now they'll do it -- because they're being forced to do so. They need to look at why they are so acomodating, it's a kind of psychological blindness.

One solid, concrete thing we can do is get the pro-Trump radical-right fake-news tabloids out of the stores where we shop. We are a captive audience to their vicious headlines when we stand in line at the grocery store. There is a recent Politico article about the brainwashing effect the National Enquirer and its ilk have on the American public. PLEASE sign our Move On petition to get these hate-filled propaganda rags out of the stores that we support with our dollars.
http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/stop-selling-hate-filled?source=c.fwd&r_by=17478167

And here is a link to the article from Politico that lays it all out about the damage the tabloids do. If you don't want to read the whole article, please at least read this one paragraph from it:

It’s easy to imagine that tabloids don’t matter; the Enquirer is a relatively small voice in the media kingdom . . . But that misses the importance of the constant cultural background noise it adds to American life: There are 37,000 supermarkets in America, with an average of about 10 checkout stands each, and many stands feature a wire rack displaying the Enquirer, the Globe, often the company’s other tab, the National Examiner, and celebrity magazines. According to an industry study, American households make an average of 1.5 trips to the supermarket each week. Every customer passes by the checkout stand, which means that even people who never purchase a tabloid still absorb the ambient headlines, and those headlines can shape their view of the world.

How about channeling that anger into the 2018 midterms? Trump's in, not much we can do about that right now but resist.

Meahwhile, we have a Congress to flip, and a Senate. 2020 is too far away to carry that anger. 2018 matters. Dems biggest failings of the last couple of decades has been over focus on the Presidential and lack of concentration on the lower elections.
