Political wives serve as character witnesses and can soften their husbands images. Melania did this for Donald after the Billy Bush scandal, telling Anderson Cooper that Bush had egged on her husband and that it was merely boys talk.
She could have done more such protective interviews in the insanity of her husbands first week in office. But she chose not to, a silence that left political insiders speculating whether there were raw feelings from the Billy Bush tape that had not healed. Her opacity, weirdly, has made her a folk hero of the left, which likes to imagine that she is a hostage to her embarrassing husband.
First ladies have also often played critical roles when they thought advisers were overreaching. Nancy Reagan gave chief of staff Donald Regan a push and Laura Bush did the same with Donald Rumsfeld.
Melania has never played that role with Donald. It was Ivanka and Jared who helped purge Corey Lewandowski and Paul Manafort. It seemed like Ivanka was going to assume some of the first lady portfolio, but right now she is too busy saving her brand from her fathers careening debut.

(18,837 posts)She's done NOTHING, probably never WILL, but Dowd gives her props for saying it is a "sly slap" against the Donald.
It's like those school kids who get trophies for participating in athletic events, win or lose, that Republicans like to complain about.

(102 posts)Oh. Please.... Maureen Dowd loves the sound of her voice.
She truly believe that's what she has to say is relevant.
I don't view Melania as a folk hero, more like a cautionary tale for women looking for a sugar daddy.
But the way, I first joined DU in 2000. When bushito..
Was given the presidency by his big brother and the Supreme Court.
I usually don't reply to what I read. I lurk constantly..but Dowd irritates the he'll out me!

(42,641 posts)"cautionary tale for women...etc" is an appropriate description for someone who deliberately chose her situation.
I cannot believe anyone could find anything good in Trump. Except possibly that he does NOT have a twin brother.
