Some people on DU love to hate Facebook. I have a very few real world family/friends on FB and belong to groups for politics and art and history. I get great graphics, information and humor from those groups.
I also play a couple of games. And for games you join the relevant community and add friends solely for the purpose of playing that game.
So I have quite a large number of virtual "friends" who simply play the same games I do. Many are liberal and many are conservative Trump supporters. I let the little stuff go and push back on the worst. And rejoice when I finally get someone to delete or block me... LOL
Anyway, I have found a really high correlation between people who post positive stuff about Trump and those who post graphics that laud spanking kids.
I really wonder if a lot of the psychological dynamics of Trump/Republicanism is thinking you somehow deserve abuse. People who were abused as kids never grew out of that sick cycle.

(130,831 posts)I'm pro-Professor Lakoff, with the Good Mommy/Bad Daddy split, and I don't think I've seen a 'spanking' discussion among my FB friends, most ACTUAL friends from personal relationships.

(7,430 posts)John Dean wrote a book on authoritarianism in politics. I haven't read it but heard him speak on the topic a number of times. He's a smart guy with a lot of personal experience whose book is well-referenced.

(6,486 posts)Somebody famous said that but I don't feel like looking up who. Anyway, concerning abuse, I extend that saying to, "The abused child is father of the abusive man." Your observation is quite likely right on.
