No reported fatalities have come in the wake of a powerful tornado that left a swath of destruction in New Orleans East, the city's mayor told reporters Tuesday (Feb. 7).

Dozens have been injured, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, and at least two serious injuries were reported.

The tornado appears to have caused damage to a large section of New Orleans East between Chef Menteur Highway and Dwyer Road.

New Orleans East is home to at least 65,000 residents, down from 95,000 prior to Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the area in 2005. New Orleans East is a neighborhood in the city's Ninth Ward.

Hail as big as ping-pong balls was observed near Kenner, Louisiana. More than 10,000 homes and businesses lost power in southeastern Louisiana because of the storms, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

A few severe storms also developed early Tuesday morning, producing quarter-size hail near Little Rock, Arkansas, while a wind gust to 62 mph was clocked in Henning,

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down around 10:45 a.m. in Jefferson Parish on Tuesday damaging some homes and businesses on St. George Avenue and along Jefferson Highway. No injuries were reported, according to a news release from Jefferson Parish.

The tornado was reported around 10:45 a.m. between the 700 block of St. George Avenue and the 3700 block of Jefferson Highway in the Old Jefferson area.

Entergy is reporting 1,400 outages in the Jefferson area.

The storm is part of strong system that is moving through the metro New Orleans area and has spawned several reported tornadoes.

Parish officials will be working with the National Weather Service to determine the storm's path and intensity.

Jefferson Parish remains under a tornado warning until 2 p.m.
