On the same day the Senate confirmed President Trumps secretary of Education pick by a historically narrow margin, a House Republican introduced legislation to abolish the entire department Betsy DeVos will lead.
Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massies bill is only a page long, after merely stating the Department of Education would terminate on Dec. 31, 2018.
Massie believes that policymakers at the state and local levels should be responsible for education policy, instead of a federal agency thats been in place since 1980.
"Unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. should not be in charge of our children's intellectual and moral development. States and local communities are best positioned to shape curricula that meet the needs of their students, Massie said in a statement.
Former President Reagan called for dismantling the Department of Education, along with the Department of Energy. But that proposal ultimately never came to fruition.
Seven other Republicans signed on to Massies bill: House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (Utah) and Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Jody Hice (Ga.), Walter Jones (N.C.) and Raúl Labrador (Idaho).
The Senate confirmed DeVos earlier Tuesday on a 51-50 vote following an all-night session forced by Democrats unanimously opposed to her nomination.

Pence is the first vice president in history to break a tie on a Cabinet nominee. Tuesday also marked the first time a vice president has broken a tie in the Senate since 2008.

(90,762 posts)And they have made great headway over the years.
The more ignorant people are the easier it is for them to vote against their own best interest.
They want a believe what we tell you citizenry that can't think for itself.
They want us obedient and compliant, without thought to fight back.
They want worker-bees who work themselves to death for little money, and to never complain about the conditions.
They want conformity to an ideology of theocracy, nationalism, and hate - which they dress up as "traditional American values".
With DeVos as SoE, and the constant pushing to destroy public education, America will continue to slide into a Trumptopian nightmare. For Trump is, in part, a direct result of the past attacks on public education, science, critical thinking, facts, and uncomfortable truths.
