I fully acknowledge that there are multiple reasons why Trump is President, including sexism, Russian hacking, FBI meddling, and a nationwide effort to disenfranchise voters. But at the end of the day, I really believe that the primary reason is the fact that most Republicans are unprincipled cowards who put winning elections over doing what's best for the country.
I truly believed that Hillary would win, in part, because a measurable number of Republicans would refuse to vote for an unhinged con man who threatened the nation's survival and well-being. That didn't happen. Republicans generally (even if they had to hold their noses) voted for their party's ticket because winning elections was more important to them than standing on their principles and safeguarding the country.
It's essentially a moot point because Democrats would almost certainly never nominate someone so dangerous and unhinged - if anything, we as a party probably err too much on conventional, mainstream candidates - but I do want to go on record as saying that if push ever comes to shove, I will put country ahead of party. The fact that Republicans can't say that anymore is a big deal, and must NEVER be forgotten.

But the people who make up the party, now, wouldnt allow that.
I have said for so long I dont like to remember, that the GOP simply doesnt view democracy or patriotism the same way we do, or the same way it shows in the dictionary.
Theirs is contingent upon their religion and their bigotries.

I don't think religion and patriotism mattered nearly as much as blowing up the system, and we have people who often vote Democrat who feel the same way. Some of them even voted for Trump. It's not implausible that a nihilist could win the Democratic nomination as well.

They loved his agenda.

(53,031 posts)Trump's nomination and then election convinces me that they are an important safeguard.
Never say never. Trump proved anyone, even the worst of the worst, can be elected in this country because ultimately too much of the electorate thinks superficially about politics. It could happen to Democrats too.
