(56,828 posts)Blumenthal repeatedly said he served in the Marine Corps Reserves during the Vietnam era. A few times he left out the word "Reserves" in his speeches.
And, the line where he said, "Although I did not serve in Vietnam, I have seen first-hand the effects of military action. the media always seem to leave out that first part which I bolded. If you see dead and wounded soldiers returning from Vietnam, you're still seeing the effects of the military action there, especially if they are friends or family. That seems pretty clear from the context of his words.

(9,350 posts)Even though Richard Blumenthal, who was in the Marine Corp Reserve, is said to have gotten five deferments during the Vietnam War, Donald Trump has no grounds to attack another person's military service record since he also received five deferments during the Vietnam War.

(99,710 posts)Blumenthal eventually served and at least didn't use a seeming contrived medical excuse to avoid service. His deferments were plausible.
