By ESME CRIBB Published FEBRUARY 9, 2017, 11:58 AM EDT
Newly sworn-in Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Thursday that he thinks a rise in crime is a "dangerous permanent trend," contradicting FBI data that indicates an overall downward trend.
"We have a crime problem," Sessions said, speaking from the Oval Office after being sworn in as President Donald Trump's attorney general. "I wish the rise that we are seeing in crime in America today were some sort of aberration or a blip."
Instead, Sessions said that he judged it to be a "dangerous permanent trend" and that "there are a lot of things" that need to be done at the Justice Department, per the pool report.
The number of violent crimes in the United States rose nearly 4 percent in 2015 compared to the year before, according to the FBI's annual data report released in 2016. The total was still lower than levels in 2011 and 2006, however, indicating an overall longterm decrease in crime rates.

(11,996 posts)Violent crime increased in all city groupings. Among cities, violent crime rose the most over the previous year (9.7 percent) in those with populations of 1,000,000 and over. In cities with populations from 500,000 to 999,999, violent crime increased 5.2 percent, and in cities with 250,000 to 499,999 inhabitants, violent crime was up 4.3 percent.
Violent crime increased 6.3 percent in metropolitan counties and rose 1.6 percent in nonmetropolitan counties.
Violent crime increased in all four regions of the nation. These crimes were up 6.4 percent in the West, 5.9 percent in both the Midwest and in the South, and 1.2 percent in the Northeast.

Our current crime rivals that of the early 60s, when America was far more homogeneous by far.

(54,330 posts)I'm talking about violations of pollution regulations that are poisoning our aquifers and waterways, including those that run though the areas where coal miners live--you remember? The ones Trump was so interested in protecting?
Also massive violations of corruption and bribery laws, SEC violations, illegal voter disenfranchisement, etc.
I'm sure Jeff Sessions CAN'T WAIT to tackle them.
Right? Hmmm, maybe not. Maybe I'm waiting for Godot.
