Top House Republican Unveils Plan To Gut Social Security

Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security, released a plan Thursday to reform Social Security that would drastically reduce benefits. The bill would make the program less of a universal earned benefit and more of a means-tested safety net that aims only to provide basic support to the poorest retirees and disabled workers.

In order to close Social Security’s long-term funding gap, Johnson would make Social Security’s benefit formula less generous for all but the lowest earners, rapidly raise the retirement age and reduce the annual cost-of-living adjustment, among other changes designed to save money.

Johnson also proposes changes that would cost the program money, like an increased minimum benefit for the poorest retirees ― provided they have a long history of covered employment ― and the elimination of income taxes on Social Security.

Under Johnson’s plan, a middle-class 65-year-old claiming benefits in 2030 ― one with average annual earnings of about $49,000 over 30 years of covered employment ― would experience a 17 percent benefit cut relative to what the program currently promises them, according to the Social Security Administration’s chief actuary. A 65-year-old with the same earnings history claiming benefits in 2050 would experience a 28 percent benefit cut compared to current law.

Don't get lost in Trump's white noise of controversies. Keep an eye on the important things like SS, Medicaid, Medicare, voter suppression, Russian hacking, Muslim ban...

Our media is chasing every rabbit trail Trump throws out. We must remain focused and stick to important issues!!!!

Next week the Republicans plan to introduce 5 different tort reform bills to give corporations virtual immunity from civil suits. Just getting rid of the regulations was only half of their problem, they have to take away YOUR ability to sue!!!!

They won't know what's happening until it hits them, and it's too late. I had one of them laugh right in my face when I pointed out that this was coming down the pipe. Even when you warn them, they don't believe you.

but most elderly folks I know are retired and they've got time on their hands.

Once the older repubs figure out they're going to get screwed by this, they will come out in droves, just like they did when the Teabagger Party started.

Older Dems will fight, of course. But older repubs will be like "We'll, as long as *my* benefits don't get cut, screw them whippersnappers."

framing the social security debate...allowing it instead to be discussed as a driver of debt, as an 'entitlement', as nearing total meltdown, as welfare for the irresponsible, etc....instead of as one of the most successful govt programs ever that simply needs some small tweaks to adjust for unanticipated stagnant wage growth in the middle income earners over the last 40 years...the top 10% instead got the income growth and the increase contributed nothing to SSI.

Some dems and one independent have done well in explaining the facts and offering solutions...but as the gop has known for years messaging is most effective if coordinated and deliberate especially if media doesn't do their job to counteract fake news.

bring together some massive forces to push back enough force to make the pukes piss themselves and fold like a cheap suit.

This is the fight we need to get into that can lead to a sweep in 2018.

They need to get the WH on record supporting this and then we got them.

And I am not going to sit idly by while you try to steal it from me so that you can give rich motherfuckers like Trump huge tax cuts.
