Most Americans oppose 'religious freedom' laws that allow for discrimination

By Jeff Taylor · Thursday, February 9, 2017

Americans are not on board with discrimination against the LGBTQ community under the guise of “religious freedom,” according to a new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute.

Sixty-one percent of respondents said they oppose religious based refusals of service to LGBTQ people. Only thirty percent said they agree with such exemptions, and nine percent said they did not know or refused to answer.

The White House has reportedly been considering a “religious freedom” executive order that would be a license to discriminate against the LGBTQ community, as well as unmarried couples, and Congress appears eager to pass the First Amendment Defense Act, which would also allow for belief based discrimination.

Trump has pledged to sign the legislation if it passes Congress, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions has also recently defended it.

First Amendment.

You are free to BELIEVE in any god, any deity, and religious tenet without government interference and prosecution/penalty.

You are NOT free to PRACTICE your religion when it violates a civil or criminal statute. For example, polygamy is part of several religions such as Mormon sects (but not all Mormons). The law does not make an exception for polygamists to be legally married to more than one spouse. They can claim discrimination, but their religion is subservient to the law. Human sacrifice on the basis of religion is also taboo and illegal.

The same standard should also apply to discrimination. Does American Society truly want to allow discrimination against any particular racial, ethnic, or gender-oriented group on the basis of practicing religion? Religion has its limits when it's PRACTICED to persecute non-practicing members.
