(12,157 posts)Cornhole and Carnival have them in DC and Bill (who makes me gag like Bill the Cat) Flores is not listed.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,174 posts)It's not exactly reaching out to their constituents if they stay in DC.
Liberal In Texas
(13,546 posts)Eventually I can see that most of the repubs will be doing town halls via phone, a nice safe controllable token gesture.
Wounded Bear
(58,647 posts)They had better pay attention.
Liberal In Texas
(13,546 posts)You are correct, a lot of blue voters would show up at a live town hall.
calimary
(81,220 posts)When it's time to VOTE, for example.
Remember when Howard Dean became chair of the DNC? He switched this Beltway Myopia philosophy to a 50-State Strategy, because he knew there were Democrats everywhere. Even in red states and red districts. And he spoke of hearing from some of them - that they were literally starving for support, and felt completely cut adrift and ignored, as though they didn't exist.
Hmmm... Just think about that for a moment. If there are Dems out there who are starving for support and acknowledgement and help, and you don't bother with them because you're just focused on whatever supposed "battleground states" and you're ignoring these other Democrats, how likely is it that they'll feel motivated to "vote or die"? I've come to realize one thing, and it applies here, too:
If they think you don't care, they won't either!
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Chose to be Democrats in deep red states and sometime they win office.
ananda
(28,858 posts).. on how upset Cornyn was at all those pesky
constituents flooding his office with calls against
Betsy DeVos.
Now, if we could keep it that way every day ...
calimary
(81,220 posts)Like there's no point? Like it's useless? Like "fuck it," what's the point?
Well, seems to me Plan B is - to make sure these folks who rubber-stamped Betsy DeVos and others have to face consequences for their actions. THEY might think this is a done deal and it's over and done with and let's just move on. But WE know differently! This is NOT over. Until WE get OUR WAY. Because this is a democracy. Democracy includes the majority rule. And WE are in the majority. NOT the GOP. US. WE Democrats, liberals, and progressives. Plus those so-called "independents" who find themselves lining up a lot more easily with us than with the CONS.
Keep the pressure on. Keep it up! They need to be forced to suffer for their votes! They need to know there's a big and expanding price tag for voting the way they did. They need to know that MAN-Oh-MAN is there a push-back. They need to know that they may have strutted their stuff with their pals in Washington (the ONLY place where the bad guys actually do have a forced, artificial, manufactured and phonied-up "majority" , when they get back home where the REAL people who count are, they better find somebody to go to the grocery store for them because they're not gonna like being confronted by angry voters and being forced to face the "music" they composed.

(3,569 posts)He is having an "Empty Chair" town hall. WTF is that?
I will try to make one of Ami Bera's events. He's my congressperson but, that guy, although a D, worries me.Need to pressure him to take a take the Orange one down, not adopt the agenda or try to work with, no press for impeachment, jail, investigate, investigate, investigate.

(7,640 posts)I went to the spread sheet and scrolled all the way to the right hand column which had a link to the facebook announcement of the townhall:
snip...Congressmember Darrell Issa has been invited to join us for this important event and hasnt yet responded.
Please click on the link at http://fight4ourhealth.org/Issa to sign the online petition to urge him to attend.
The event will be on February 21st at 6PM at the Jim Porter Recreation Center to learn and speak out against the reckless plan to repeal healthcare coverage and protections with no serious replacement.
Will you or someone you love lose your healthcare?
How will the plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act affect your current healthcare coverage?
How will seniors, small businesspeople, and people with pre-existing conditions be affected?
What can you do to STOP the plan to take away healthcare from millions of Americans?
Event Partners: Courageous Resistance Encinitas, Indivisible North San Diego County, Indivisible Ocean Hills, Indivisible San Diego North District 49, Our Revolution North County San Diego,
Preserve Progress, Together We Will North San Diego County, The Wagon Circle, Service Employees International Union California (SEIU CA), Service Employees International Union 221 (SEIU 221), United Domestic Workers of America (UDW), Organizing for Action (OFA), American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP), Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest, San Diego Labor Council (SDLC), San Diegans for Health Care Coverage/CCHI, Health Access. ...snip

(81,220 posts)He had a harder fight last year than usual to keep his seat. And conditions have certainly changed in our favor since then as far as who's active and who's fired up 'n' ready to go, which is even better news for our side. Wonder if we could knock him out of there next year, once and for all? That would be a major embarrassment for the GOP, almost as big as when Eric Cantor got primaried outta there. That would be Sweeter-than-SWEET!
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)It's a call-in, so people who are home resting after a long day can participate. I like it. A lot.
Ghosts, our ALEC-serving congressman in Georgia does empty-chairs: Call-in meetings. In our case, he talks, selected people ask selected questions, and everyone else just gets to listen.

(53,061 posts)These are not town halls that Congressmen/women have agreed to.
The February 23rd townhall for McSally is organized by constituents and McSally has already said she would not come.
of course you can have a townhall without a Rep.

(81,220 posts)Not sure how often it gets updated.
Maybe if you start with a local gathering that you can find in the Indivisible Guide -
https://www.indivisibleguide.com/local-action-groups#local-action-groups/
- you can start agitating for one. Make some noise! Start the discomfort. Be like itching powder! Start an "itch" that people are gonna wanna scratch. If they don't want to show up for one, or host one, MAKE 'EM LOOK BAD FOR HIDING FROM THEIR CONSTITUENTS! There should be a price to pay for ignoring or avoiding their voters! Those voters PAY THEIR SALARIES AND PAY FOR THEIR HEALTH CARE AND OTHER BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES!!! Seems to me they damn well BETTER show up!
Think termites! Be inspired to action by the way termites SOMEHOW, SOME WAY, ALWAYS seem to find a way in. And they start small, but they keep going and keep chewing, and they lay their eggs, and those eggs hatch and then you have MORE termites - that will find their OWN way in, and...
And if you wind up with a town meeting whether or not your "representative" shows up, MAKE SURE you notify your local TV station. Coverage of these town halls is juicy right now. There are some GREAT visuals of that chanting and protesting and signs and little old ladies at the mic expressing their fear about being left without health care coverage for their increasingly serious needs. That makes for some GREAT television.
I learned three basic questions to be answered when I was first starting out as a news reporter/anchor/writer, and basically learning on the job (because back then, there were VERY few colleges with bona fide journalism departments. All we had at my school was one magazine writing class in the English department. BUT we had a college radio station where we taught ourselves as we went along.)
1) "What happened?"
2) "Who cares?"
3) "What do we see?" (That's for television coverage. The radio corollary for those big cities where there's still an all-news station or a full-service station with an actual news department would be "what do we hear?"

calimary
(81,220 posts)Hey! THIS, TOO, is useful information.
Hmmmm... they don't have any town hall meetings scheduled? Hmmmm... Wonder what THAT means? Sometimes I wish I knew how to write the sound one makes when imitating a chicken. I can do a great one, but it's in the hearing of it, not the reading of it. When I try - "bck-bck-bck-bck-bck-bck-BGKAAAAAAAWWWW!" I dunno - does that get the point across? Sometimes with the big KAAAW at the end, I raise both my arms out at my sides at the elbow, to suggest wings flapping.

(81,220 posts)I learned about "Huddles" that way. Those working the Women's Marches seem to have devised this as a way to harness the enthusiasm and fire-in-the-belly that started burning, bigly, on January 21st. You click on it and it will show you where "huddles" are. These are groups being set up either by more organized entities OR just individuals who want to DO SOMETHING, and decide to host one in their homes.
I went to one at a yoga studio in Santa Monica on Wednesday night. They had to move it to a larger room to accommodate the larger-than-expected attendance. It was a terrific experience! Mostly women but a handful of men, too. One of them stood up with a few of us who responded when the leader asked - "who here feels like they've been an activist all their life, could you please stand up?" The leader also asked who was new to this and quite a few hands went up. Brand new activists, freshly grown from the fertile fields of the Women's March in downtown L.A. last month! People who suddenly realized they A) give a damn, and B) want to DO something BECAUSE they give a damn!
The Indivisible Guide, too, is worth its weight in gold-pressed latinum! Can't push that link enough!

(81,220 posts)Obnoxious twit-ette. She's another one who's so smug, and with such a superior attitude, I would LOVE to see her sent to the unemployment line! Although she'd probably get rescued by the Heritage Foundation or given a "professorship" at Liberty "University" or some such. That's what a lot of these assholes and asshole-ettes do when they get voted out, go get picked up by some CON outfit or "think" tank or other regressive set-up, or they're named a senior fellow in some knuckle-dragger institution, or, hey! They could do what Eric Cantor did after being primaried. Go get folded in on Wall Street and make the big bucks to which he undoubtedly felt entitled.
