Good to know! It's great that this kind of planning and infrastructure support is going on.

I must say, I've NEVER been paid by anybody to go march or get active. And nobody I know or have met at any of these gatherings was paid to be there, either.

There were so many speakers from vastly diverse backgrounds and with a broad number of issues. Rev Barber as always was a very moving speaker. Joan Baez phoned in to sing "Ain't nobody gonna turn me around." I wish everybody could have been there. Wish *I* could have been there. I watched it on livestream.com

It may be possible to watch it now even though the event is over

I know what you mean about not realizing the scale. I've been to events like that. The feeling of being part of something that special lasts a lifetime.

I noticed there was a big screen above the stage showing what was happening on the stage. But I figured it wasn't big enough for people in the back to see.

The location looked rather narrow, which made it hard to get close to the stage I imagine. Was it on the Fayetteville Street Mall? That's kinda how it looked to me.

Did the link work? I hope so.

When I went to the Women's March in downtown L.A. last month, I found myself immersed in the crowd. But you definitely don't get a sense of just how big it is, if you're somewhere down IN it.

All I knew was what people were estimating, there. A few "there's gotta be 100-thousand here..." REALLY? Well, I figured that MIGHT be true, but who knew. As we inched along through the streets, at times so crowded it was hard to move, the sheer mass of people was really quite stunning. As we moved, we saw people lined up along the outside railings on several levels of parking structures, with their signs, many wearing pussy hats, and waving to us. We saw a few people up in the trees. We saw people on balconies in some of the tall buildings. We saw people sitting on top of sheltered bus bench stands, and parked trucks. We could only see the crowds immediately ahead of, or behind, us.

It was only later, at a local Democratic club meeting I attended, where Mayor Garcetti announced there were 750-THOUSAND people in attendance the previous Saturday! WTF?!?!?!??!?!?! Seven-Hundred-and-Fifty-THOUSAND people? Are you fucking KIDDING me???? Three-quarters of a MILLION people in the streets of downtown L.A. all that day? Seriously? More than half the room at that meeting raised their hands when someone asked - "who, here, went to the march last weekend?" That's where we learned that L.A.'s march was the biggest in the country, and also, The WORLD.

Yeah, I've been an activist for most of my adult life. But I have NEVER seen anything like this. Through the Vietnam War era, the Iraq War era, and everything in between. NEVER have I seen anything like this. I never even saw the opposition work it up like this, even on their best days. Except, maybe, once - now that I think of it. The weekend before the 2004 GOP CONvention in New York City, where there was such a massive turnout against the Iraq War that people were marching past the convention center all day long. Only covered by CSPAN. But it went on all day. People. Just coming and coming and coming. It never stopped - all day, those lines of people in the streets, who just kept on walking and holding up their signs and being peaceful. Sometimes it was a trickle, sometimes small groups, sometimes a large flow of people together. But it went on all day through that part of Manhattan. GREAT to see. NOBODY covered it, though. I guess the networks were too busy worshipping bush/cheney.

to watch. So beautiful. So powerful. Thanks for sharing your experience of the L.A. event. And your history of prior demonstrations. The marches against the Viet Nam war made a difference. That gives me hope that the current even bigger and more persistent demonstrations will bring back sanity and compassion to our government.

I used to live there and a few years ago when I retired I thought very seriously about moving back. However, it seemed to me like NC was going back to some dark days of rampant racism and hate for "others" and voting red and I just couldn't see myself tolerating that on a daily basis in my senior years. I still miss a lot about the state, and seeing this turnout is so uplifting. I realize it's Raleigh, but as someone else in this thread said, they came from all over NC!

We must all persist and resist and always keep in mind that the majority is not like Trump and his awful cabinet people.

for my two sons.

Never thought I could live in the south until I discovered Chapel Hill in the 80's and with its history of
being progressive and interest in good public education we decided we'd go for it in 2000. My youngest
also graduated UNC Chapel Hill in 2012.

And then the awful gerrymandering after 2010 and the elections of 2012. You wouldn't think a state could go
downhill so fast...but wow...the Republicans have really attacked it. With HB 2 as a parting shot from McCrory, too.

I've been wanting to get out, but my husband and I can't agree on where to go. He loves the university town--which
still has its benefits although Spellings is out to destroy the university--and I just want to go somewhere that the gun nuts
and bigots aren't in control. So, here we sit. I would LOVE it if we could get fair districts redrawn and people would wake
up, but the state voted for Trump, too. Sigh.

Resist! Persist and resist! We're in.

I even applied for a job there when I was thinking about moving back. I was conflicted about moving back. I live in Michigan now and you would think because it wasn't the South that it would be so different. What I've learned is that there are just as many "rednecks" in Northern Michigan as in the South and that's no lie. I think if you live in or near a university town it's much more likely that you'll find like minded people who are more diverse, more educated, more liberal. I currently work at a university and am fortunate that I meet people from all over the world.

I would have probably been more likely to settle in Asheville if I had moved back. I doubt I'll leave here now since I have a grandbaby!

hopefully, those Senate seats that were thought to be endangered won't be. And if we can manage to pick off 3 Senate seats, we can finally have a check on the madman in the White House. I have hopes that people who have been on the sidelines will wake up and help us take back control. The saving grace for us seems to be that Independents hate one party rule, no matter which party it is, so I can envision them voting straight "D" in the midterms.

But the cost of living is hard to beat and my son is a cellist w/ various symphonies in the area. I am so glad this state is representing so well and becoming more and more purple. I resolve to resist and be active as much as I can given my current limitations. Right now I can only make phone calls and emails, but am doing so daily. Am hopeful I can return to my former days of actually showing up!
