When Republicans in Kentucky seized total control of the state government last year, Damon Thayer, the majority leader in the State Senate, began asking around for advice from counterparts in other capitals where the party already dominated both the legislative and executive branches.
How should we handle all this power? he wanted to know.
One answer impressed him, Mr. Thayer said, from a senior Republican lawmaker in Wisconsin: Move quickly.
Kentucky Republicans have done just that, swiftly passing laws to roll back the powers of labor unions and restrict access to abortion. But they are only getting started, Mr. Thayer said in an interview: They also plan to make sweeping changes to the education and public pension systems this year.
And they have plenty of company.

(130,865 posts)I am out here in gunville but my housemates are at least sane about theirs. The first thing they asked me when I was checking this place out was, "How do you feel about guns in the house?"
I responded that I have a couple myself and as long as everyone is responsible with theirs and they aren't just lying around then I am okay with that. Mind you, I live in ranch country and guns are a tool for management of property and self defense. when you have to call 911, it's going to be at least 20 minutes for anyone to get here so the rule about shooting someone threatening you for self preservation is one that the locals cherish yet rarely happens. And when you have biased LEOs to some degree, it's wise to have a firearm handy... it's still kind of wild out this way. Most of the folks I know out here use their guns for hunting and pest control and don't wear them to show off or intimidate others. I'd still rather be out here than a city, I know 90% of the folks for a good 70 miles in any direction so I'm not too worried about them and their guns.
When it comes to politics, I don't agree with a lot of them but we still rely o each other to survive in this rugged landscape and trust is a big thing. I don[t like seeing all the bum,per stickers in support of the current regime but I am seeing far fewer of them all of a sudden and that's a good sign.
