GALVESTON MAN'S OBITUARY: 'HIS LIFE SERVED NO OBVIOUS PURPOSE'

He seemed nice. I wonder who he favored in the election?

GALVESTON MAN'S OBITUARY: 'HIS LIFE SERVED NO OBVIOUS PURPOSE'

http://abc13.com/society/ouch-family-writes-brutal-obituary-for-local-man/1746919/

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- Ouch! The family of a 75-year-old Galveston man took off the gloves and delivered a brutal, yet honest obituary.

Leslie Ray Charping died last month after a battle with cancer.

"At a young age, Leslie quickly became a model example of bad parenting combined with mental illness and a complete commitment to drinking, drugs, womanizing and being generally offensive," the obituary stated.

The family went on to describe Charping as a person who lacked ambition and motivation.

"With Leslie's passing he will be missed only for what he never did; being a loving husband, father and good friend," the family said.

is to teach the rest of us what not to do unless we want everybody around us to hate our guts.

If he actually had a mental illness they could have cut him some slack. Maybe he would have been a better person if he either had not had a mental illness, or if he had been able to get help for his mental illness. Numerous people have said that some people self medicate with drugs and alcohol if and when they cannot get medical help for their problem(s).

I'm not sure I can take joy in this when that combination can seriously screw up someone's life. At his age, I don't know what could have been done to remedy it, but it just sort of seems like he veered away from the path at a time where corrective resources weren't readily available and never quite got back on it. That actually makes me a bit sad for him having to deal with mental illness and addiction in the 50s/60s.

It's just spiteful and unnecessary. If you hate the guy just be glad he's gone and leave it at that.

But I get your point.

Years ago, I was picking up dry cleaning and I forget what transpired but there was an old man being a real asshole - I can't remember if he said something to me or the cleaner or what. After he left I gave a look to the old guy who owned the dry cleaner a look as if to commiserate on what an asshole that guy was.

He looked at me and smiled, not a fake smile but more pity, and said in his broken English "he is not well. He has been sick". That pretty much shut me up.

The owner also told me once "you are very busy minded" - but that was after like the 20th time I paid for my cleaning and walked out without taking my suits. Lol. So there's that.

Billy Fingers was a masseuse who was also a n'er do well and who died in a drug overdose. "Billy Fingers" is his sister's nickname for him. His sister is a musician and composer on Long Island.

Despite his n'er do well status, his sister loved him very much and it wasn't long after his passing that he began talking to her. He wanted her to write a book about what it's like on the other side, which she did. I read it. It actually is quite a captivating book.

According to Billy, however, it doesn't matter what kind of life you live here. The idea is to come here for the experience. There is no "punishment" other than what one might inflict on oneself.

So after reading this book, I would look at it this way: Leslie Ray Charping wanted to incarnate and live a life that was completely at odds with what our social norms say is a "good life." I can see how one might gain perspective from such an experience.
