General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIMO these are the two most important big-picture posts on the board right now.
These two threads pull back from "parochial political punditry", to present an overarching global picture. It's a picture that clearly shows the existential-level danger the West is now in - a complex danger of which the Shitgibbon Catastrophe is only one facet (albeit an important one, especially for you Yanks.)

By all means pay attention to the political maneuvering in Washington, but don't get lost in it. While those maneuvers are crucial to the fate of America, there is also a much bigger game being played.
I also highly recommend following the work of the clued-in British commentator Louise Mensch. She's a real attack ferret. Look for her on Twitter.

(20,998 posts)These are definitely two of the most relevant and timely posts on DU right now.

(13,524 posts)I don't know if DU rules permit a reposting of JUST the original OPs like Alex's and, soon, Fortune's Fool? - All the comments are weighing down my old IPad and it's crashing before I can read them, wannhh...plus, perhaps new eyes will find "beginning" (life changing read)
Just discovered Ms Mensch last night - attack ferret indeed - she cray! (in a great way!)

(21,088 posts)My posts tend to be more fragmented because I take a "stream of consciousness" approach. By that I mean that as I work things out for myself, I post the information that I've found significant to that process. So it tends to come out in a series of posts, a piece at a time rather than as an umbrella narrative.
I had thought about trying to write a multi-point narrative post like those two, but I'm wrestling the black dog of depression right now, and don't have the focus to organize it. Then these two came along and said it all anyway, so I've let myself off the hook.
The truth is out there!

(21,088 posts)In the case of Trump/Russia it serves her well. I just ignore the other stuff, but I do understand why others can't.

(7,233 posts)She's also been a really horrendous Twitter bully, tried to make an unsuccessful career as a spreader of fake news/propaganda at a few right-wing/libertarian Web outlets, and has not infrequently been a rabid, nutty conspiracy theorist.
She's on a run of being on the right of some issues right now (she's hated Putin for years, at one point calling for Obama to conduct air strikes against Russia, which explains part of why that's the case), but she's no true long-term ally of any progressive. Treat with caution.

(348 posts)Ferrets are a homogeneous subspecies in the Mustelidae (weasel) family that includes stoats (likely what you are referring to in the UK), ferrets, otters, wolverines, polecats, and the notorious Honey Badger. These compact carnivores are arguably the most successful and ferocious of all mammalian predators. As anyone who has watched the BBC footage of a stoat pursuing, catching, killing, and consuming a rabbit 10x its size can attest, you don't wanna fuck with weasels! Attack ferret is a fantastic and hilarious moniker to ascribe to her. Kudos!
Here is a link to the BBC video for anybody that want's to watch...truly impressive:

(2,573 posts)different than the runts we have here. They are more robust in size and have a much more diverse bloodline. They are descended from a polecat and there are no "wild" ferrets in the UK. If you see a ferret looking thing it's considered the polecat and not a ferret. There are some black footed ferrets out west in the USA. I've enjoyed the company of ferrets for quite a few years now...one thing they all share is that they are tenacious and fearless. A ferret (much to its own peril) is not afraid of anything. And that is why the truth shall be ferreted out !!

(21,088 posts)What worries me is that even if we nail the Shitgibbon Crew, the Russian masterminds are going to keep on truckin'. They have plans for the world, and are not about to give them up.

(348 posts)Worst case scenario: We're totally fucked and have one hell of a fireworks show coming to send our species into oblivion.... To put it existentially: Nothing is okay, so everything is okay!
Best case scenario: We are a living and breathing gear in the most consequential time in modern human history, and each of us has the chance to help determine the future of our species. Not since we usurped our hominid cousins and spread across the globe upon the retreat of the glaciers has there been a more consequential and determinate time in our evolution. We should all consider ourselves privileged to be here and now with the chance to watch and participate in this epic.
That said, the emotional human drama of it all can be impossibly hard to escape in a moment... Have a drink, smoke a joint, do whatever you gotta do to stay calm and undeterred in the face of such awesome responsibility and knowledge. Ultimately, our species will come together as one and evolve out of our neolithic tribalism, or we will join the great hall of extinction into which every living creature eventually is admitted. We are on the cusp of becoming, either way.
Cheers!

(21,088 posts)I've felt enormously privileged to be alive and aware at this point in history. The responsibility is indeed awesome, and the knowledge breathtaking.
Climate change, ecological collapse, energy limits, global debt overburden and geopolitical shenanigans are all converging right now. They are combining to make the next decade the most "exciting" that humans have ever lived through. In the process a lot of our most precious, deeply held beliefs about the nature of the world will be shattered. Many of us (me included) may not survive the experience.
And it's all live on the Internet! What's not to love?

(3,014 posts)Be exhilarating, but some of us have small children to protect and this becomes all too overwhelming.
I can't stand having my daughter's future determined like this.
I appreciate these threads and have seen Russian new world order as the larger goal for some time now.
But there has to be something I can do, or I have failed as a mother.
IamFortunesFool
(348 posts)My daughters are 12 and 6, respectively, and I am horrified at the prospect of the broken, polluted, and chaotic world they are poised to inherit. However, unless you, personally, are an agent of this evil, then you have not failed as a mother at all. In fact, the most important thing you can do is to educate your children so that they can also competently and confidently navigate the swamp. This war will not be decided in a matter of the next few years, and the younger generations are key to how it ultimately plays out. While I can every bit understand and appreciate your feelings of helpless foreboding, that sort of paralysis will only lead to depression and apathy. We cannot live in fear of the coming fight. We have to learn to embrace the reality if we are to have any hope of working effectively in it, and ultimately surviving it. Be strong and resolute for your children, even if you feel hopeless and weak. They need your strength to seed their own.

(3,014 posts)Thank you.
On election night, I saw what was happening and knew instinctively that the rise of Trump was something totally different that just republicans taking control of the government. Having DU hacked at the same time was a huge red flag. And I told my co-worker, I didn't know how or why, but I knew Russia was involved. We are medical scientists and evidence is paramount, so I knew I sounded crazy. I had nothing to base my claim.
Thanks to you and the others for putting all the together.

(348 posts)We are all born, toil, and die under the same sun. There is a great and abiding hope that is sprung from that embrace; that we will finally come together and realize the full potential we possess to take care of one another and determine our own future. Humanity is on the brink of stepping outside the chain evolutionary contingency as it has hereto applied to life on this planet, and the possibilities are endless. Let the bright light of our prospective future shine for your children to see and chase...that is our path out of the darkness.
*Obligatory caveat:
The principal of evolution by natural selection is perhaps the most profound and manifoldly applicable concept ever articulated, as it has endless applications to processes well beyond the biological adaptations of organic life. It applies to any dynamic enterprise or force. We can never escape this process... However, we are, technologically speaking, close to obtaining the capacity to actively manipulate our biology, and as such, attempt to direct our destiny as a species.
Bit of a tangent, I know.... Sorry... can't help myself sometimes

(12,212 posts)my two nieces were there. The older is almost 17.
The group of us were sitting around a round dinner table, and somehow we ended up talking about how bad things were; then my brother in law said, "It's only going to get worse."
It was kind of funny in relation to what we were talking about so we all laughed.
But I saw my niece's face drop. I could tell she was worried. I know she has a negative opinion of Trump, et al.
It was very sad to see.
I really hope we can pull through this and save our country and the world.
