Proposal to balance Montana budget by cutting education moves forward

MISSOULA — The bill that funds Montana's public schools has been amended to cut funding by nearly $7 million next year as part of the effort to balance the state budget.

State statute requires an inflationary increase be applied to K-12 base aid, laid out this legislative session in House Bill 191. Enrollment and property tax values also figure into the increase.

It's a bill that legislators work to push to the governor's desk as quickly as possible each session, in an effort to help school districts budget for the coming school year.

Superintendent Elsie Arntzen's office prepares the Office of Public Instruction's budget based on the inflationary increase outlined in HB 191, according to Montana Code Annotated 20-9-326.
