The volume of online search requests for flights to the United States has dropped since Donald Trump took office as president compared to the period before his inauguration.
That data, gathered by Hopper Research, is presented as a reflection of global consumers' interest in traveling to the United States, decisions that impact not only the airline industry, but also state and local tourism economies.
Specifically, Hopper found daily flight search demand from other countries has dropped 17 percent compared to three weeks before Trump became president. If youre wondering if this is a seasonal effect, Hopper said last year the drop at this time was 1.8 percent.
Hopper said 94 of the 122 countries for which it has significant data saw a decline in flight search demand. Hopper also broke down which American cities are receiving less flight search demand from overseas, saying San Francisco, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, Orlando and Denver all saw 20 percent or greater drops, by that metric, after Trump became president.

(599 posts)How is damaging our tourism and hospitality industries a good thing? What about turning people away who would have traveled here for business before the Muslim ban?

(17,984 posts)We have all of the databases with all of this information all around the globe. What if we could have a very simple dashboard for each of the databases placed in the WH so that tRump could see them? He couldn't mess with them, no manipulation at all, just read out. It would be simple reminder to him every moment of every day just how much damage he is doing.

(4,358 posts)on the cumulative effects of all the post-9/11 security on tourism to the US.
The full body scans were bad enough, but if they're going to start full interrogations at the airport and delve into peoples' social media, it would certainly give me pause about going through that hassle just to visit.
Would be interesting to contrast that economic analysis with the number of actual terrorists that have been caught by all the new security technology and also how much it costs for those body scan machines to buy, run and staff them.

(18,402 posts)We've got our one-man foreign blockade sitting right behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office. And it doesn't cost $20 billion dollars. (Though it still costs far too much, in other terms.)
Seriously, folks: if people don't want to come here, whether to immigrate or as tourists, we're in big trouble. Many cities (mine included) depend hugely on the foreign tourist industry. Hotels (hopefully mostly the Trump ones) will lose business bigly, as well as restaurants, cultural attractions like museums and theaters, taxis, etc. And when we lose foreign immigrants, we have a big brain drain problem as well, among doctors, university professors, innovators.

(31,318 posts)and right now it's very strong--which means it is more costly for people from other countries to travel here for vacation. (And unlike Donnie dumbfu*k I didn't have to call someone at 3 am to figure that out.)
