House science committee chairman Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, and two subcommittee chairmen issued statements Monday saying the 2015 study relied on improper data manipulation and was rushed to publication to support the Obama administration's push for the Paris climate accords later in the year.

The study was done by Thomas Karl, then head of the Asheville-based National Centers for Environmental Information, and other NCEI scientists. A former NCEI scientist said Feb. 4 that the authors had not followed NCEI protocols in handling and storing data used for the study, but he also told The Associated Press and at least two other media outlets this week that he was not accusing authors of improperly manipulating data.

The AP quoted critic John Bates as saying Monday there was "no data tampering, no data changing, nothing malicious. ... It's not trumped up data in any way shape or form."

But Tuesday, Smith said in a meeting of his committee that it appears scientists "did falsify data to exaggerate global warming."

FactCheck.org's Vanessa Schipani wrote Thursday that "there's no evidence to support the (science) committee members' accusation of data manipulation."
