Long before we started giving cards to girls to let them know that we choo-choo-choose them, the Romans were celebrating love in their own way. Every February 15, they held Lupercalia—the original Valentine’s Day.

Some of the events the Romans looked forward to on Feb. 15 was the running of naked thong-carrying men who would whip women along their race with said thongs, the eating of goat entrails, and singing of bawdy songs (among other things)

Sadly Christianity wagged its finger at this type of thing and Lupercalia with all of its celebrations ended in about 500 A.D. when the Pope said all that blood and sex had to end.
