Bernie Sanders on Twitter:
Today I will be asking the Senate Intelligence Committee to thoroughly investigate if Russia coordinated with Trump and his campaign.

(63,840 posts)not with the treasonous repigs in charge. A independent committee has to look into this.

(28,394 posts)Kamala Harris also asked for an independent investigation (not a congressional one, though).

(146,288 posts)How much attention do you suppose those in the majority are going to pay to you, Bernie?
Join the Democratic Party, please, Senator Sanders. Then, you can add your voice to the party's demands.
It's nice that you're calling for an investigation, but rather irrelevant, if I may say so.

(146,288 posts)It's simply the truth. Bernie calling for something in the Senate is slightly more important than me doing it, but only slightly.
He is unaffiliated. He is an independent Senator. He really carries no weight in his demands.
He could change that today, though. He could become a Democratic Senator and join with the rest of the Democrats.

Talk Is Cheap
(389 posts)At least Sanders has guts to speak up... Its called having a backbone and actually very relevant.

(146,288 posts)I suggested that he'd have more impact if he were a Democrat. It costs him nothing to speak up, and puts him at no risk, so it's not really a matter of being brave.

(146,288 posts)Bernie Sanders is not a member of that party, despite having run for the presidential nomination as a Democrat. What is a Democrat? In the United States a Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party.
So, your statement is incorrect by definition. Being a Democrat implies membership in the Democratic Party.
Senator Sanders is an independent Senator. He does not call himself a Democrat. You are the one doing that.

(65,008 posts)I'm registered as an independent, but with the exception of a county board seat pursued by a moderate guy i knew personally for years (and the local EMA director) i have never voted for a republican. Not a democrat, but seriously anti-Republican and i think that description fits Sanders. Are you suggesting i'm not an ally?

(146,288 posts)My point is that Senator Sanders would have more clout in this particular situation if he were actually a Democratic Senator.
I fully realize that he votes with the Democratic caucus almost all the time. He acts as a Democrat in most cases. But, he has steadfastly refused to become one, except when it was necessary to run as a primary candidate for President.
Is it a fine point? I think not. Bernie Sanders is a fine Senator, and I appreciate his hard work in that office. However, in this particular instance, he is speaking with an independent voice when it would be more effective if he were a Democrat.
In a de facto two-party federal government, being outside of both of those parties detracts from your position, really, on anything truly important.
Bernie Sanders will do what he chooses to do. I'm merely offering a suggestion to him. He is not the enemy. He is, however, diminished in his power by avoiding that party affiliation.
I don't know you personally. I assume you are who you say you are. If you say you are an ally, then I accept that. But, you are not a Democrat, for whatever matter that makes. I am a Democrat. I hold a minor elected position in that party. In my state, it is the Democrat-Farmer-Labor party. That is my affiliation, and I'm proud of that affiliation. If you are an ally, then thank you very much for being an ally. I will have to take your word for it, though.
