yes, obviously, donnie is *a* clear and present danger to our democracy, but taking a step back, he is but a lightning rod for a multitude of serious threats to our democracy -- problems that will not go away even if donnie himself does.
our opposition party lacks the power to seriously oppose the republicans. we can't stop the embezzlement, we can't stop the appointments (yay, one! huzzah!) we can't stop executive orders turning the little regulation and oversight we have left into mush. we may be able to filibuster some things, this remains to be seen.
republicans lack the will to seriously oppose donnie. most of them are far more concerned about their party and their own jobs and about being primaried than they are about either losing to democrats or doing the right thing for the country. they can't seriously oppose donnie until donnie becomes toxic to the rank-and-file republicans. democrats do not count at all in this calculus.
the media is composed of a hyper-partisan right-wing bubble and a completely inept mainstream media that has long since abdicated any sense of civic responsibility or investigative drive and replaced it with a mission to spread topical, hopefully sensational, gossip. they are easily ignored and easily distracted.
the best case, should donnie go away, is that we're left with a calmer, somewhat more professional, government controlled entirely by republicans. we'll get crazy tax cuts, inhumane cuts is social programs, massive deregulation, and increase in pollution, limits on corporate liability, yet more voter suppression, and other catastrophes. it'll just happen more professionally.
the lying and the bigotry will continue, it will simply be a bit less clunky and a bit less obvious.
it is possible that the donnie misadministration will unravel quickly and spectacularly. i will certainly celebrate its early demise. but make no mistake, the fight for our democracy is a marathon, not a sprint.

(105 posts)Trumplings are in love the President and he can do no wrong. Remove Trump and the Trumplings will not disappear into thin air.
They may not be the entire Republican base, but there are enough of them that they can intimidate some of the other Republican voters and lawmakers who would otherwise not be supportive of Trump.

(52,118 posts)are simply brainwashed. even the ones who are naturally right-wing, the brainwashing certainly amplifies it and makes them more extreme and motivated.
until the hate propaganda is brought under control, the problems will continue.
