attack from foreign powers. Remember, our military was busy fighting each other. Able-bodied, and sometimes somewhat less able-bodied men of all ages, including children, were in uniform and pre-occupied. Can't imagine our military ever being stretched thinner.

In the aftermath we had to deal with the assassination of the president, Reconstruction, and the impeachment of another president. All of that made us extremely vulnerable.
