2. I think 2 things are happening here

1) He misses the adulation of the campaign trail and
2) He thinks that going back to what worked for him on the campaign will work for him now. He was down in the polls during the campaign, refused to follow the advice of his aides and did what he wanted, and he won. In his baby mind, he's probably seeing a corollary here and thinks going at it his own way will work again.
