Among the symptoms of Spain's economic doldrums over the past few years has been the emergence of organized street bandits - especially in Barcelona, due in part to all the tourism.

One of the most common are the tire poppers: the one with the best aim will throw jacks under your tires, and when you pull over to look at the damage the guy's family members will appear - feigning a very well-acted concern over your car and offering all kinds of help and suggestions.

While they distract you with the "helpful local" routine, their kids ransack your car looking for any valuables - and they are quick little bastards.

By the time you realize what happened, they'll be long gone - and the police are useless.

That said, it's a great city. If you take precautions, you should have a grand time.

...cities of the world.

There are many beautiful things in this city, but clearly the people who live there are what makes the city what it is, as this event shows.

They survived fascism.

We have yet to show that we can too.

They guy is a Democrat, but very anti-immigrant. It just gets to be too much work sometimes.
