US Citizen Renewing Passport Told To Turn In Green Card
February 16, 2017 9:44 PM By Andrea Lucia
DALLAS (CBS11) Tony Airitam is and always has been a U.S. citizen.
Born in Brooklyn, New York. In a hospital. Its all documented, he said.
When he renewed his passport this year, though, it arrived with a letter.
Please return your invalid permanent resident card, it read. Your timely submission of these documents will provide USCIS with the information necessary to update its systems to reflect your current citizenship status.
Airitam first had to figure out what a permanent resident card was.
Once I did, I was not only surprised but very concerned, he said.
More commonly known as a green card, its not a document Airitam has ever had or ever needed.
Because I was born here in the United States, he explained.
Both his original and newly issued passport list his birthplace as New York.

(53,339 posts)I have a letter the VA sent me, telling me I never filed a claim. At the top of the letter they had typed...my claim number! (Which I'd had for 4 decades.)

(4,394 posts)It doesn't make sense to commit identity theft to get a green card by stealing proof that you are a US citizen. That's like stealing a house and then paying the mortgage anyway.
The time before last that I renewed my passport they spelled my name wrong and when I asked them to correct it they just put a little note at the back that nobody would ever find. It took me a good 15 years to sort out all the cascading bullshit that resulted. Even though every time I applied for anything I flagged the misspelling and referred them to the note at the back, I still ended up with my insurance, lease agreement, health care records, bank account and work visa in the wrong name. Not to mention every single time I bought plane tickets, I had to get them reissued with the correct name and then argue with the gate agent and security because the name on my passport and the name on the ticket "didn't match".
Honestly it would have been easier just to legally change my name, except the misspelling resulted in a very unfortunate pronunciation.
Mistakes do happen but the passport agency doesn't seem to trip over themselves to correct them.
These are definitely not the people you want determining if you should be deported.

(31,384 posts)One of them did and the other (whose passport expires this November) did not.
I worried that there would be incompetence, possible outsourcing to a for-profit group, a layer of
new discriminatory reviews of people, and at least an increase in renewal fees.
I won't be surprised to hear more of these stories.

(12,051 posts)paperwork and photos needed, but it was returned. They did not accept the photo because it had a tiny shadow behind one of my ears. They are very, very fussy in Canada about such things. So, freaked out, I went to another photographer, got some more photos, and resubmitted everything whilst crossing my fingers . . . hooray! I got my renewed passport 2 days ago!

(19,047 posts)To this day people are still underestimating the depravity of this administration. They will start ejecting non whites from the country and they will rig the courts to not be able to do a damn thing about it.
And as sure as I am sitting here, they will start making people make loyalty oaths to Trump in order to stay.
