(115,270 posts)A jet aircraft burns a lot of fuel at a low altitude, and you'd barely make it to 10,000 for a 40-mile trip. And just taking off in a 747 sucks Jet-A like crazy. Why not take a helicopter, or drive?
But of course, one has to make the grand entrance...

While the 747 is an aging aircraft, if configured for passengers it probably gets around 70-80 miles per gallon per person. This is unlike the newer commercial aircraft that are 90-100 MPG/Person. Takeoffs pollute the most and normal airport landing fees are in the thousands of dollars.
