It came out in 1991 and it skewered daytime soap operas. Spoiler alert: There is a great scene where Sally Field's character is about to have a breakdown because she feels like a forgotten has-been, and her close friend and confidante, a writer (played by Whoopie Goldberg), suggests she go "across the bridge" to the Paramus mall where Whoopie will pretend to be a shopper who'll "recognize" Sally Field the soap star on an escalator, causing a minor autograph-seeking fan flurry, just enough of which gives Sally Field's character a strong dose of a much-needed "fame fix".
That's what this weekend's Florida re-election rally was all about for trump.

(36 posts)This is not the point of this thread, but Soapdish is one of my top 5 favorite movies. Whoopi plays the head writer of the soap who at one point kvetches in exasperation, "I can't get my actors to play coma, they find it limiting. . . . . ".

I don't remember that scene. I'll have to try and find that movie to stream.

(51,974 posts)hudsucker proxy -- the tim robbins character becomes a hit with the media after inventing the hula hoop, and gets laughter and headlines with the accidental one-liner, "i didn't expect all this hoop-la!"
later, when the company is on the skids and the media turns on him, he tries his old "i didn't expect all this hoop-la" line again and it falls completely flat.
donnie trying to relive the election and hillary and the campaign reminds me of that scene -- a failing man desperately trying to go back to the last time he felt loved.
