We can all agree that undocumented workers who have committed serious crimes should be sent home *, but I fail to see the efficacy or morality of deporting undocumented workers who are productive, law abiding, and have ties to the community.
Maybe they shouldn't have been here in the first place, but if folks didn't give them jobs they couldn't have stayed. It seems cruel to make them leave now.
*after they served their sentence.obviously it was implied.

Then what do we do with all the unemployed?

- For those undocumented workers who can prove good character and ties to the community they should be given a path to citizenship which includes the payment of some sort of fine commensurate with income.
- Undocumented workers who have committed serious crimes should be sent back home.
- Once this system is in place employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers should be fined.

(99,708 posts)I suspect a lot of undocumented workers do contract or private work.

(4,820 posts)and if convicted, imprisoned as the law requires. I think the system fails when they are simply deported, at the random say of who knows who, only to return and resume the lawlessness.
Of course there are laws prohibiting hiring of undocumented. For example, not having a SS # or other tax number. But false ids are presented leaving the employer to do the work of finding out who they are. But is this so unusual? Try getting a job without being able to show a credit report, giving references and presenting at least a driver's license.
The system set up for the owner, not the worker, and the workers will get screwed until the system is changed.
