Independent Movie Theaters Just Launched A War On Trump With A Brilliant Move

>"Independent movie theaters across America have decided to screen the film adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 to protest President Donald Trump’s quick descent into authoritarianism. The theaters say that, “[This] endeavor encourages theaters to take a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as ‘alternative facts.'”

On April 4, at least 90 theaters will show the film because April 4 is the day that Winston Smith, the main character, begins a diary."<

and didn't think it was very good.

None of the three versions of that movie are any good, in my opinion, and I don't know why. The first two were made in the 1950's and suffer from really low budgets. The 1984 one seems to miss the point of the movie. It was Richard Burton's last film and he's terribly miscast. I think he plays the O'Brien character.

However, lots of people will go see it and be reminded of what it depicts. And actually, in the book the totalitarian government quite successfully erases history and changes facts. It depicts a world in which there is no hope whatsoever that things will ever get better.

Edmond Obrien is Winston. I have versions in my home library. Plan to attend the April 4th one in my city.

they claim the restriction of conservative speech on many campuses is akin to 1984 speech and thought control.

That said,the book was better.

about wanting to create a musical 1984. It came to me when I couldn't get the image of a line of dancers singing:

It was a bright, cold day in April...
And the clocks were striking 13...

And I think I could come up with a good song about room 101:

Everyone knows,
Everyone knows,
Everyone knows...
What's in room 101...

The rats will eat your face
There's terror in that place

Everyone knows,
Everyone knows,
Everyone knows...
What's in room 101...
