What Ever Happened To All The Old Racist Whites From Those Civil Rights Photos?

What ever happened to those white folks from those old photos?

A few months ago from this day of publishing, I had an interesting discussion with a white guy at work. The subject of riots came up. Pretty much, he attempted to place a mass association of “riots” to Black Lives Matter protesters. Fascinated with his thoughts (which severely lacked critical thinking), I throw him a critical thinking question:

“Do you think that Black Live Matter protesters, command riots?”

I had to repeat the question because he was in total shock, as if he walked from a train wreck, because he didn’t expect to engage in critical thinking.

He answered no, which was smart; they do not command riots to occur. It’s a bit stupid to suggest such. While he did concede the point that BLM do not command riots, he pointed out that the riot association is strong because that’s all the data the media supplies him (you don’t think that’s without intent?) and still, overall, if the protests were PEACEFUL then change would occur. I pointed out that there’s numerous peaceful protests, they occur all the time. I as a street photographer (and freelance journalist) have been to many, and can literally report on a lot of knowledge. I mentioned one 60 miles from our location that happened months prior. I also mention what the media does when they are peaceful protests and vigils — they leave without reporting. Still, he was unmoved, because to him credentialed media > freelance journalism. So okay.

“Peaceful? You mean like Colin Kaepernick?“

Once again I saw this white fellow, robbed of breath, beginning to realize what type of corner he walked himself into. He, a regular white-American male, hates Colin Kaepernick. He really despises Colin Kaepernick. He hates his PEACEFUL protest. It’s really baffling, because he also mentioned MLK which made things even more hilariously awkward.

Has a lot to do with whites not being able to get over Obama. These people's children and grandchildren are alive and well. You can meet them in a comment section near you.

7. I don't know what needs further explanation

As Van Jones said, the election of Donald Trump was a whitelash against Obama. If people want a cookie because some white people voted for a black man, I'm not the one to give it to them. A number of issues have shown me, a black woman, a lot about how little this country has progressed. The whole Tea Party creation was the start of white people having a hissy fit over the election of a black man and it has only continued with the alt-right and the rise of white supremacy in high places.

9. The election of Donald Trump was mostly voter apathy

They didn't show up. Why? The media told them Hillary had it in the bag for weeks before the election and potential Dem voters thought no one could vote for such a moron as trump. Michelle Obama pleaded with those same voters not to become apathetic, that Barack had won by razor thin margins in a lot of those rural counties that carried trump. While I completely agree there is a resurgence of weirdo hate groups in the spotlight, I don't think they were mostly responsible for this awful election - voter apathy was. I hope they learned their lesson - unless they want to be abused by an awful government for generations to come. Yes the tea party was having a hissy fit, but that alone would not have removed them from the fringes of society and put them in charge of our government.

10. I would buy that if there weren't so many losses across the board

Republicans are successfully blowing every racist dog whistle available to play on white fears. Law and order being at the top. Not to mention that Black Lives Matter has created a whole new level of turmoil for white people. I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe that we're still a very racist nation. Obama didn't change that as much as he exposed it.

11. It's not hard to believe we are a very racist nation

The fact that we had enough people vote for trump proves that, not to mention all the useless obstruction to Obama during his eight years. I do, however think there is enough opposition to overwhelm them. They just have to get out and keep at it until the haters are moved back into the holes the crawled out. I have a small bit of hope looking at these town halls, but the momentum has to remain or nothing will change.

12. Apathy is its own form of racism

It's the silence that has me and many other black people feeling like we are fighting alone. Where were all these town hall people when black people were screaming about our lives mattering? Where were they when we were screaming that Trump was going to set the clock back on civil rights? How in the world could anyone, paying attention, be apathetic during this past election? The only answer is that they didn't think it would affect them, but they were okay with it affecting minorities. Of course, this is general and doesn't encompass all whites, but let's get back to the original post. Where did all the people in those photos go? They watched and did nothing to stop evil. Nothing much has changed.

the voter apathy or neglect extended to many racially mixed districts that turned out for Obama but not Hillary. (or trump for that matter) As far as how anyone paying attention could vote for someone like trump, I'm completely with you on that. I felt the same when they voted in these congressional do nothings going back to Reagan and continuing through the GWB years. Our rights have been eroding for years, for no reason other than laziness, stupidity, ignorance or a combination of all three. When you say nothing much has changed, I say yes it has, it's worse.

2. My own personal experience from the 60's

I lived in Norfolk VA and went to Catholic school...we never missed a day of school because of integration.

I never even knew schools had a problem. Till years latter watching TV

I was isolated from most of the integration fights. My father's best friend was black, and I think we were kept away from the turmoil.

I remember there were two black students enrolled in my Catholic school for a year? Then they were gone?

My father was the person who guided me regarding racism...and I am forever beholding to him!

it wasn't even about whether they supported or agreed with him. i personally thought he was a fool for not voting .

but the level of hatred over the way he was protesting said more about them than him.
