Aiding & Abetting

Throughout last year’s campaign, we watched as you – the powers that be in the Republican party – supported the candidacy of a man who was clearly unfit for any office, no less the most powerful office in the country.

We watched as you ignored his bigoted and racist remarks, made excuses for his mockery of the disabled – even laughed-off his remarks about grabbing women by their “pussies” as somehow appropriate for a potential occupant of the Oval Office.

We watched as you stood silent when your candidate “tweeted” comments that were truly bizarre in content, often demeaning those who he perceived had slighted him in some way – behaviour clearly demonstrative of a vitriolic, paranoid man who lacks the clear-headedness and measured decision-making skills that the presidency demands.

We watched – with a combination of horror and disbelief – as you encouraged your constituents to elect this incompetent, inexperienced, mentally unstable man to the presidency. And with that election, you put him in charge of our armed forces, our foreign policy, the direction of our nation – and the nuclear codes.

Since Trump’s inauguration, we have continued to watch as you have repeatedly ignored his blatant lies, his refusal to participate in fully comprehensive intelligence briefings, the conflicts of interest surrounding his businesses, and his use of his office to promote his family’s personal financial interests.

We have watched as you have supported his putting equally incompetent and inexperienced people in charge of our country’s vital departments, and in positions of power that affect every aspect of our nation’s security and well-being.

As though all of the above wasn’t horrifying enough, we have watched you make every possible attempt to minimize the facts that have emerged – and continue to emerge – about the possibility (probability?) that your pResident, members of his administration, and/or his closest advisors acted in collusion with a foreign power to undermine our democratic elections, thwart the will of the people, and put a man in the White House who will do the bidding of that foreign power without question or hesitation.

By refusing to agree to and cooperate with an independent investigation into such serious allegations, you are aiding and abetting the enemy. You are, with malice aforethought, placing our very democracy in peril by refusing to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of allegations which, if proven, represent an unprecedented crime committed by those in the highest offices in our government.

And we are still watching. We are watching your every move and listening to your every statement with more scrutiny than has ever been brought to bear on a political party and its elected representatives. We are determined to pursue the truth, and your every attempt to obstruct our access to that truth will be duly noted by ALL citizens, regardless of party affiliation.

I would strongly advise any Republican up for re-election in 2018 to think carefully about their options. As this administration’s ties to Russia become increasingly apparent, increasingly compelling, increasingly provable, the last thing you want to be seen as doing is aiding and abetting those who actively worked with our nation’s enemies for political gain.

Despite your efforts thus far to distract the populace from the facts, the truth will out. It always does. The “Russian ties” story is not going away – in fact, it now has a life of its own, and won’t be stopped by even the sleaziest snake-oil salesmen you have among your ranks.

The country is now afire - as you've seen from the angered citizens who show up at your town halls, protestors marching in the streets, protestors showing up at your offices and your homes.

Whose “side” you’re standing on when the smoke clears is up to you. Just remember that collaborators never fare well when it finally dissipates, especially those who claim they had no idea what was going on - right before their eyes.
